Maybin Sparks Padres In Season Opener PDF Print

Cameron Maybin may have finally found a home with a Major League team.

An All-State baseball player during his prep days at T.C. Roberson High School in Asheville, NC, Maybin, at least for now, seems to have found a possible dwelling with the San Diego Padres. He made his presence felt on opening day as he homered with two outs in the ninth inning that  tied the game. He eventually knocked in the game-winning run with a single in the 11th as the Padres rallied to beat St. Louis 5-3 at Busch Stadium.
It was a deserving reward for Maybin, who was forced to  leave the game in the bottom of the 11th with leg cramps. Afterall, Maybin has been searching for a permanent home since he was selected in the tenth round of the Major League Baseball draft by the Detroit Tigers in 2005. He was eventually traded by the Tigers to the Florida Marlins. The Marlins sent him  to San Diego in a minor deal last November.
Maybin lived up to the hype with impressive numbers at the minor-league level. He's a lifetime .306 hitter with 44 home runs and 238 runs-batted-in. Unfortunately, Maybin hasn't been able to duplicate those numbers at the big-league level. Going into Thursday's season opener, Maybin was hitting .248 at the MLB level with 14 home runs and 173 strikeouts in 553 at bats. But Maybin came through for his new team in a big way.
And he did it on opening day, when legends and dreams are born.
