Here is a rundown of Thursday's night's games around the area:

 

APPALACHIAN STATE BASEBALL:

 

Ryan Arrowood shakes off a sluggish start and turned in his best performance of the season to date. The righthander goes eight innings and strikes out ten men as the Mountaineers (11-11) defeated Cornell 8-3 at Smith Stadium. The Mountaineers have won 20 of their last 21 non-conference games at Smith Stadium. Tyler Tewell belted a three-run homer and Trey Holmes had two hits and two RBI. ASU pounded out ten hits. The Mountaineers and Cornell wrap-up their three-game series on Friday with a double-header. Our coverage begins at 1:40 pm on AM 1450, WATA.

 

WHS WOMEN'S SOCCER:

 

The Watauga High women's soccer team pulled off a huge win Thursday night in Boone by knocking off Northwestern 3A/4A Conference heavyweight Hickory, 2-1. The Red Tornadoes gave up an own goal, and Kendyl Baird scored what proved to be the game winner at the 60-minute mark of the second half on an assist by Hannah Younger. The Red Tornadoes scored their only goal on a penalty kick with two minutes remaining that broke up the shutout. WHS (6-1-1 overall) is now 3-0-1 in the NW3A/4A Conference. The Pioneers entertain St. Stephens next Tuesday night. The JV team defeated Hickory 3-0. Hali Wood-Miller, Katherine Welsh and Eliza Enterline all scored for WHS. Marci Mahoney had an assist. Coach Brittany Bolick has also announced that the Wilkes Central game that was rained out on March 10 will not be rescheduled.

 

WHS TENNIS:

 

The Pioneers defeated Fred T. Foard 9-0 in Newton last night. The Pioneers (7-0 in the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference; 8-2 overall) were led by Steve Lake, Michael Smith, Harrison Battle, Chris Ludwig, Patrick O'Neal and Aaron Evans, who were all victorious in singles play; Lake and Smith, Battle and Ludwig, Evans and O'Neal were victorious in doubles play. Noah Moomaw, Jackson Yates and Ben Proffitt were your winners in exhibition play. The Pioneers return home to play Wilkes Central in a non-conference match on Monday.

 

WHS WOMEN'S LACROSSE:


Watauga defeated West Forsyth 10-6 Thursday night in Boone in a makeup match that was rained out March 10. Danielle Welsh had four goals to pace the Pioneers. The women's team (2-3) travels to Mount Tabor Friday night; the men's team entertains Hickory Friday night, Marvin Ridge comes to town on Saturday.


WHS SOFTBALL:

 

The WHS softball team dropped a 5-2 decision to West Wilkes Thursday night in Millers Creek. Kim Robinson paced the Pioneers (1-5) going 3-3 with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Shelby Drummonds had a double and scored a run, and Caroline Yates had a base hit. The Pioneers had six hits on the night. WHS travels to Hickory Friday night.

 

 

 

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL:

 

 

Mallory Clay and Mariah McVey of Ashe County High School have been named to the North Carolina Basketball Coaches Association District 11 team. Clay, who played for the North Carolina All-Stars in the Carolinas Basketball Classic in Myrtle Beach, SC last weekend, was a first-team selection; McVey was a third-team selection. Clay averaged 15.7 points-a-game to go along with 6 rebounds an outing. She also shot 52-percent from the fioor. Clay was chosen to the Mountain Valley All-Conference team three times during her career, as well as being named to the All-District team three times She was also chosen to the MVAC All-Tournament team three times. The Catawba College signee also earned MVAC Player of the Year recognition for the 2009-2010 season.
