Appalachian State University women’s basketball player Kelsey Sharkey (Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Ursula) was honored for her stellar efforts over the past week at the 2011 Southern Conference Basketball Tournament, as the sophomore was named the SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday.

Sharkey posted three standouts performances over the past week at the conference tournament.

In Appalachian’s 10-point quarterfinal victory over Davidson, the forward had a game-best eight rebounds, to go along with eight points and tied a career-high with six assists.

Her impressive outings did not end there, as she was unstoppable in ASU’s 24-point rout of Elon in the tournament semifinals. In the game, Sharkey grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds, tied a career-best with 12 points and reset her career high in assists, dishing out seven.

In the championship game against Samford, Sharkey was yet again active on both the offensive and defensive fronts, as she hauled in nine rebounds, recorded 10 points and totaled two assists and two steals. For her stellar efforts, she was named first-team all-Southern Conference Tournament.

Sharkey holds a 3.68 GPA and is majoring in electronic media broadcasting and is the second women’s basketball to be tabbed with the academic award, as teammate Courtney Freeman (Carlton, Ga./Madison County) picked up the award back in December.

The Mountaineers will wait to hear their postseason fate, but by winning the 2011 SoCon regular season title, the team has secured at least a spot in the 2011 Women’s Basketball National Invitation Tournament. The WNIT field will be announced late Monday, March 14.
