Hickory Women Advance To State PDF Print

The Hickory High women's basketball team marched its way into the Class 3A state championship game Saturday afternoon.

The Red Tornadoes (28-2) defeated North Iredell 63-54 in the Class 3A Western Regional championship game at Flemming Gymansium at UNC-Greensboro. Jada Payne, who was named the Western Regional's Most Valuable Player, led the Red Tornadoes with 20 points. Hillary Sigmon added 19 points.
The Red Tornadoes will now play South Central (27-4) in the Class 3A title game next Saturday at the Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh. South Central won the East Regional title by knocking off Northern Nash 47-24 at the Crown Arena in Fayetteville.
Next Saturday's title game begins at 5 pm. The West Caldwell men made it to the Class 2A state championship game last season, where they lost to Kinston. 
The Hickory men were not as fortunate. They lost to Hunter Huss in the Class 3A regional title game 77-62 at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center. The Red Tornadoes fell behind 36-22 at halftime and never recovered. Denzel Dillingham led Hickory (26-4) with 18 points and nine rebounds in the loss.
And Mountain Heritage lost to East Rutherford in the Class 2A regional title game 70-49 at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center. John Cannon of the Cougars (23-7), who is being recruited by several schools including Appalachian State,  scored 11 points and had  11 rebounds in his final high school game.
