A dangerous game of bump and rob on an Iredell interstate highway has ultimately lead to the arrest of a Wilkesboro man, charged this week with assaulting and robbing a woman. The woman and her two children were traveling I-40 last week when her car was bumped twice by a Lincoln Town Car. She pulled over and stopped, as did the Lincoln, but after she rolled down her window to talk to the man, he struck her in the face and grabbed her purse before fleeing. The woman was treated for injuries in the assault. Monday, the Iredell Sheriff’s Department reported that Wendell Alden Lilly, 35, was apprehended in Knoxville, Tenn. after Iredell detectives searched for Lilly in Iredell, Wilkes, Davie, Forsyth and other counties before locating his vehicle Monday in Winston-Salem after learning of an ex-wife who still lived there.
Lilly had abandoned the vehicle and signed the title out of his name in an attempt separate himself from the vehicle, according to a press release from the Iredell Sheriff’s Department. He used the victim’s credit card, and Detectives obtained video from locations where Lilly tried to use a credit card stolen during the robbery. Following up on that lead, Iredell detectives determined that Lilly boarded a bus in Winston-Salem destined for Chicago Monday, and Iredell detectives contacted officers in Knoxville, Tenn., where the bus would have to stop. The press release said Lilly was taken into custody in Knoxville and is being held without bond pending extradition back to North Carolina.  The Iredell Sheriff’s Department charged Lilly with common law robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and assault on a female.
