A Wilkes restaurant was probably totaled in a fire early Thursday morning, a blaze battled by three fire departments. Anita’s Family at the Christian Home Church Road and Traphill Road was heavily damaged by the fire.
Traphill was called in at about 3am, when after a neighbor to the building reported the flames, with Shepherds Crossroads and Mountain View called in as well. Wilkes Fire Investigator Niki Hamby told the Wilkes Journal-Patriot that the building was essentially destroyed, with the roof and other major portions needing to be replaced due to fire damage. The paper said about two-thirds of the roof collapsed. Losses were estimated the building a $150,000 loss and its contents a $50,000 loss. Hamby said the fire likely started from an ice-making machine in the kitchen in the backside of the building that overheated or had an electrical short. |
