The letter finally surfaced—Yadkin County Sheriff Mike Cain resigned, effective yesterday.  There was mystery as his office was found cleaned out Monday.

County Commissioners yesterday appointed  William "Ricky" Oliver, a lifelong Yadkin County resident, as sheriff.  Oliver brings 32 years' experience in law enforcement, and will fill the remainder of Cain's four-year term, which just started. Cain had been re-elected in November. Cain, whose office had been the focus of a State Bureau of Investigation probe since last July, submitted a resignation letter dated Friday as part of a plea arrangement. Cain pleaded guilty to six counts of conversion of property by bailee, one count of private use of a publicly owned vehicle, one count of a public officer benefitting from a private contract and one count of willfully failing to discharge his duties as Sheriff. All the charges were consolidated into one count of conversion by bailee and one count of willful failure to discharge his duties as Sheriff.
Cain was given a 45 day sentence which was suspended for five years, ordered to pay the cost of court, $20,000 restitution to Yadkin County, a $1,000 find, perform 200 hours of community service, tender his resignation as Sheriff and permanently tender his BLET certification.
