House, Outbuilding Heavily Damaged in Fire PDF Print

A house and an outbuilding on North Hoots Road north of Ronda were heavily damaged in a fire that started from wood stove ashes Thursday afternoon, according to Wilkes Fire Investigators. The Wilkes 9-1-1 Center got a call from a Ronda fireman by radio as the first caller reported the fire at 3:30—a working structure fire that turned out to be two structures on fire.  Investigators say the outbuilding caught fire from wood stove ashes dumped nearby earlier Thursday by the occupant of the house, identified by authorities as Clarence Dowell. The fire quickly spread from the outbuilding to the single-story wood frame residence, separated by about three feet. Flames burned the backside of the house and spread to the attic, causing the roof to collapse. The Ronda Fire Department was aided by Pleasant Hill and Austin fire departments.
