Watauga High Athletics Director Tom Wright has announced that the WHS basketball teams will make up their games with Alexander Central on Saturday afternoon in Taylorsville.
The games were origiinally scheduled to be played on Tuesday, but they were postponed because of inclement weather. And the starting time for those games will depend on whether WHS has school on Saturday. As of late Thursday afternoon, Watauga County schools announced they would be closed on Friday, but were scheduled to be open on Saturday, depending on road conditions.
If the Pioneers are in school Saturday, then their games will begin with the JV girls at 4 pm; but if school is closed on Saturday, then the JV girls will get things started at 2 pm down in Taylorsville. Depending on the situation, our coverage Saturday on Oldies 100-7 FM will be as follows: if WHS has school our coverage begins at 6 pm; but if schools are closed on Saturday, then our coverage begins at 4:30 pm.
As far as Friday's game with Hickory is concerned, the final verdict is still up in the air. As of late Thursday afternoon, no decision had been made concerning classes on Friday by the Hickoy School District. If school is open, the Pioneers will travel to Hickory to play the Red Tornadoes and our coverage begins at 6 pm on Oldies 100.7 FM. But if school is closed, then the WHS-Hickory game will be postponed because of the no school-no play policy in Catawba County.
The Pioneers announced on Wednesday that the Fred T. Foard game that was snowed out on January 7 will be made up on Wednesday, January 26 at Lentz-Eggers Gym.
The WHS wrestling team will make up its match with Alexander Central on Saturday at Lentz-Eggers Gym.
And the same formula applies concerning basketball. If WHS is in school, the wrestling match (that was snowed out Tuesday night) begins at 2 pm. But if WHS has school, then the Pioneers take on Alexander Central at 4 pm.
As far as Friday is concerned, the WHS-Hickory match has been postponed and will be rescheduled at a later date. The reason, Hickory coach Wayne Hicks had a family emergency and is currently out of state. The McDowell match that was scheduled to start at 5:30 pm Friday night is currently on hold. According to WHS Athletics Director Tom Wright, the Titans may not make the trip to Boone because the Pioneers are out of school.
The McDowell was orginally scheduled in December, but it was postponed because of wintry weather.
