After leading Appalachian State University men’s basketball to a pair of Southern Conference wins, Omar Carter (Charlotte, N.C./Charleston Southern) was named the league’s Player of the Week for the second time this season.

(Charlotte, N.C./Charleston Southern) was named the league’s Player of the Week for the second time this season. The junior guard led the Mountaineers with 25.0 points and 6.0 rebounds in wins against Davidson and Georgia Southern.

Carter scored 19 second-half points to break open a tie game at Davidson in front of a hometown crowd to lift the Apps to a third-straight win against the Wildcats. He led Appalachian (7-7, 3-1 SoCon) with 25 points and seven rebounds in addition to a pair of assists and a steal in the 74-66 road win.

The transfer from Charleston Southern knocked down a three-pointer from the corner with 1:20 left in the game and the shot clock expiring to halt a DC run and then added three free throws in the waning moments to secure the victory.

The guard then repeated his performance on Saturday against Georgia Southern with 25 points on 8-of-15 shooting and matched a career high with five three-pointers. Carter hauled in five rebounds and led the team with three steals to accompany an assist.

Carter played an instrumental role in ASU’s decisive 20-point run late in the game with eight points and an assist in the stretch that sealed the 79-51 victory in the squad’s league home opener.

For the week, he sank 53.1 percent of his field goals and 54.5 percent of three-pointers. Carter made 10-of-14 free throws as well.

Carter earned the league’s first weekly honor of the season after posting 35 points in ASU’s season opening win at Tulsa. Donald Sims (Gaffney, S.C./Fork Union) won his fifth-career Player of the Week honor the following week. Appalachian is the only school with multiple winners this season and is also the only North Division team to earn the honors.

The Mountaineers conclude their two-game homestand on Thursday with a visit from UNC Greensboro (0-15, 0-5) at 7 p.m. Sims will be recognized as ASU’s new career leading scorer by head coach Jason Capel and former scoring champ Don King (1958-61) prior to tip-off.
