A State Patrol trooper was injured yesterday morning while investigating a wreck in Caldwell County. At about 8:30 a.m., Trooper Myrl J. Pennington was working a three-car wreck near the intersection of Cajah Mountain Road and Horseshoe Bend Road, standing near a truck that was involved in the wreck and was close to the side of the road. James Sullivan Jr., who was driving east on Cajah Mountain Road, came up to the intersection, according to the patrol report, and was blinded by the low angle of the early morning sun, and didn’t see the traffic controller or the wreck. His vehicle his hit the back of the car involved in the first wreck and the impact forced the truck from the first wreck into Pennington, who was thrown to the ground. Investigators say he injured his hip, wrist and elbow. He was taken to the hospital as a precaution. Pennington was treated and released from an area hospital Monday afternoon.

A driver was injured in the collision of two Toyota pickups—then a house yesterday afternoon.  Annie Harris was in her two-story brick home when one of the two pickups slammed into a ground-level window on the front right side of the house at the intersection of N.C. 18 North and Reynolds Avenue in North Wilkesboro. Ms. Harris said there was a loud crash and that the house shook in the 4:15pm wreck. One of the pickup drivers was slightly hurt in the wreck, and
North Wilkesboro police interviewed the driver of the other pickup, who wasn’t injured, at the scene. Police say it appeared that both pickups were northbound on N.C. 18 when one struck the other in the rear and the lead pickup then slammed into the house.
