While many interstates and roadways were cleared yesterday, low temperatures overnight have led to patches of black ice on bridges and low lying areas making driving conditions hazardous in some areas again this morning. Emergency management officials also are keeping a careful watch as wind speeds are expected to increase across much of the state, especially in the mountains. The increasing winds could lead to more widespread power outages.

The North Carolina Highway Patrol has responded to more than 150 calls across the state between midnight and 7 a.m. Yesterday, troopers responded to 2,385 calls for service, or approximately four times their normal call volume. Four weather-related traffic fatalities were reported Sunday with one each in Mecklenburg, Onslow, Lee and Johnston counties.

Transportation crews will begin treating bridges and icy spots this morning and also will focus on clearing secondary roads. For updated road conditions, motorists should call 511 or visit  http://tims.ncdot.gov/tims/. Travelers are asked NOT to call 911 or the Highway Patrol.

If you plan to travel, the North Carolina Highway Patrol recommends the following precautions:

• Reduce your speed. Driving at the regular speed limit will reduce your ability to control the car if you begin to slide.

• Leave plenty of room between you and other vehicles.

• Bridges and overpasses accumulate ice first. Approach them with extreme caution and do not apply your brakes while on the bridge.

• If you do begin to slide, take your foot off the gas and turn the steering wheel IN THE DIRECTION OF THE SLIDE. Do NOT apply the brakes as that will cause further loss of control of the car.
