| Wind, Black Ice Concerns for Travel |

While many interstates and roadways were cleared yesterday, low temperatures overnight have led to patches of black ice on bridges and low lying areas making driving conditions hazardous in some areas again this morning. Emergency management officials also are keeping a careful watch as wind speeds are expected to increase across much of the state, especially in the mountains. The increasing winds could lead to more widespread power outages. The North Carolina Highway Patrol has responded to more than 150 calls across the state between midnight and 7 a.m. Yesterday, troopers responded to 2,385 calls for service, or approximately four times their normal call volume. Four weather-related traffic fatalities were reported Sunday with one each in Mecklenburg, Onslow, Lee and Johnston counties. Transportation crews will begin treating bridges and icy spots this morning and also will focus on clearing secondary roads.
