Boone Police were called to the Boone Post Office on Blowing Rock Road after an unopened package, tossed into a trash can, raised suspicions. Postal employees called police to report the package and their perception of smoke rising from the same can.  The officer responding inspected the package and the trash can to find that the smoke was from a discarded cigarette, the package, an apparently discarded fruit cake.  'Tis the season.
