The Appalachian State Mountaineers begin their quest for a fourth national championship on Saturday.And following a first-round bye, the Mountaineers (9-2 overall), the No.1 seed in the Football Championship Series Division I playoffs, now know just who they will line up against on Saturday in the second round at Kidd Brewer Stadium. ASU will play Western Illinois.
The Leathernecks, from the Missouri Valley Conference, won their wildcard game as they knocked off Coastal Carolina from the Big South Conference 17-10 on Saturday. Western Illinois (8-4) is led by quarterback Matt Barr, a Walter Payton Award candidate.
Barr threw for 233 yards in Saturday's win against Coastal Carolina. But he was also sacked twice and he also threw a pair of interceptions. For the year, Barr, a senior, has thrown for more than 35-hundred yards. He's also thrown 26 touchdown passes, but he's also thrown nine interceptions. The Leathernecks blew a 10-0 halftime lead against Coastal on Saturday, but rallied to win on Barr's five-yard touchdown run with 1:50 left to play in the game.
