Watauga High sophomore Darby Middlebrook is actually human, afterall.

Middlebrook, the Class 4A state cross country champion and who became a running sensation this fall in the state of North Carolina, came up a little short on Saturday at the South Regional of the Foot Locker Nationals. Ironically, she just missed the cut at McAlpine Park, on the same course where she dominated the competition more than a month ago in winning the Class 4A Western Regional.
The top ten finishers in both the men's and women's races advanced to the national championship race in San Diego on December 11. Middlebrook finished 13th in the women's championship race and missed the cut by three places. But her time was impressive, none  the less, as she crossed the finish line in 17:48. Hannah Barbour was 55th in 18:37. Hailey Middlebrook was 14th in the women's Junior/Senior race; and Daniel Osborne, who finished ninth at the state meet and earned all-state honors, was 99th in the men's championship race. But he also had a very good time, completing the course in 16:07.
