The Avery High Vikings saw their dream season come to a crashing halt on Friday night at MacDonald Stadium.

And it came against a familiar foe, the Mitchell Mountaineers (8-6), who ironically also play in the Western Highlands 1A/2A Confernce. The Mountaineers, who dropped a 14-7 decision at Avery (10-4) in the regular-season finale on November 5, got their revenge Friday night as they eliminated the top-seeded Vikings 47-22 in the western semifinals.
The win moves Mitchell into the western finals next Friday night. The Mountaineers, a No.7, will now play on the road against Albermarle, the No.2 seed. Albermarle advanced to the western finals by knocking off Monroe, 31-13.
Mitchell didn't waste any time putting the contest out of reach as the Mountaineers grabbed a commanding 21-7 lead in the opening stanza. It was 28-14 at the halftime break. Quarterback Justin Hughes and running back Shawn Jackson did most of the damage for the Mountaineers.
Hughes ran 20 times for 134 yards and scored four touchdowns; Jackson had 23 carries for 205 yards and three scores. The Vikings had 371 yards offensively, including 349 on the ground. Quarterback Alex Villanueva struggled. He was 7-19 for 72 yards; He also threw four interception. One bright spot for the Vikings came in the first quarter when Hunter sheilds returned a kick-off 99 yards for a touchdown.
