Tennessee authorities have taken the lead in the investigation into the shooting of an ASU student who claimed to have been shot and kidnapped Wednesday evening on campus. Johnson County authorities found Matthew R. Burleson, 22, of Stanfield, N.C.,
in his truck on Highway 67 at the edge of Mountain City, but the vehicle turned when officers approached, then turned back again, ran off the road and overturned, according to Johnson County Sheriff Mike Reece. When officers approached the truck, they found Burleson alone inside, suffering a gunshot wound to the right side of his chest, a shot that appeared to have passed through Burleson and into the seat behind him with another bullet hole in the passenger's side windshield. Johnson County and ASU investigators are working to determine the time line of the incident and tie that in to text messages Burleson apparently sent his girlfriend during the incident. In addition, they're looking at a .40-caliber handgun found in the road along the path the truck took just before the crash--the gun registered to Burleson's father.
