Carter Named SoCon Player of the Week PDF Print

For his dominant debut in Friday’s win at Tulsa, Appalachian State University men’s basketball’s Omar Carter (Charlotte, N.C./Charleston Southern) was named the Southern Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.

Carter tallied 35 points on 10-of-18 shooting with five three pointers to pace the Mountaineers (1-0).
The junior guard is the first honoree of the season, and joins senior Donald Sims (Gaffney, S.C./Fork Union) as the only ASU players to win the weekly award since the 2007-08 season. Sims was honored three times in 2009-10 and once as a freshman two years prior.
Carter’s 35 points are the second-most by any player in the nation so far this season and his 35.0 scoring average is the highest in NCAA Division I. The transfer from Charleston Southern sank 5-of-7 treys and all 10 free-throw attempts in ASU’s 89-86 road win against the Golden Hurricane (1-1). It was ASU’s first win in a road opener since the 1993-94 season.
In addition to his impressive scoring display, Carter hauled in four rebounds, dished out an assist, blocked a shot and swiped one steal in 35 minutes on the floor.
Carter and the Apps open their home slate Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. against Montreat, before embarking on a six-game road trip.
