 The Appalachian State football is the unanimous No.1 team in the country for the fifth consecutive week.
The Mountaineers (8-0 overall; 6-0 in the Southern Conference), off to their best start in 81 years, are ranked No.1 in both The Sports Network/Fathead.com FCS Poll and the FCS Coaches Poll. The Mountaineers received 134 first-place votes in the TSN Poll; and 38 first-place votes in the FCS Poll. ASU, which plays at Georgia Southern on Saturday, is followed by Jacksonville State (16 first-place votes), Villanova (one first-place vote), William & Mary (three first-place votes) and Delaware in the top five. Wofford, which received a first-place votes, is ranked seventh; Stephen F. Austin, which lost to Texas State last Saturday, falls to No.10 in this week's poll. But the Lumberjacks are ranked third in the Coaches Poll and also received the other first place vote. Jacksonville State is second, William & Mary is fourth and Villanova rounds out the top five. Wofford is tenth in the Coaches Poll; Chattanooga, which had its five-game winning streak snapped by Elon last Saturday, is 23rd. ASU has won 26 consecutive SoCon games, and the Mountaineers are slowly creeping up to the league record of 30 straight wins set by West Virginia back in the 1950's.
