Shannon Herndon and Meredith Smith of the Pioneers came up a little short in their quest for a state championship on Friday.

Herndon, who was the No.2 seed at the Western Regional last weekend, and Smith, a No.4 seed at regionals were both eliminated Friday afternoon on the first day of competition at the Class 4A State Tournament at the Millbrook Exchange Park in Raleigh.

Herndon won her opening match as she defeated Marissa Pereira of Jack Britt in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. But she lost to Melissa Kandinata of Green Hope in the quarter-finals, 6-3, 6-0. Smith lost her first-round match to Lauren Frazier of Greenville Rose, 6-2, 6-3.
