Panthers rip WHS, 45-0 PDF Print

The Hibriten High Panthers battered Watauga 45-0 Friday night in a Northwestern 3A/4A Conference game at Jack Groce Stadium.

The Panthers, who nearly pulled off a huge upset against Matthews Butler (No.1 in the state in Class 4A, and ranked ninth nationally by Rivals.com), piled up 434 yards offensively, including 370 yards on the ground. Quarterback Michael Isbell led the way with 131 yards on 11 carries and three touchdowns.
He scored on runs of 30-, 26- and 47-yards. His 47-yard jaunt in the third quarter highlighted a 23-point explosion that gave Hibriten (7-1 overall; 3-0 in the NW3A/4A) a commanding 42-0 lead.
Making matters worse, running back Kyle Chambers suffered a neck injury with 3:39 left in the game.
"Kyle was alert and aware of what was going on," said WHS senior Caleb Watson. "I didn't really see what happened, but for precautionary reasons, they took him to (Watauga Medical Center) for observation. As far as the game was concerned, we never executed our plays. That's about it."
Chambers was injuried after taking a swing pass from quarterback Ethan Greene and was thrown for a three-yard loss. Chambers laid on the turf for nearly 20 minutes before he was placed on a stretcher and removed from the field by ambulance.
"He hit the ground pretty hard," said WHS coach Tim Pruitt. "But he had movement and he was alert, which are all good signs. The training staff was taking precautionary measures because they were concerned about his headache, keeping his eyes open because the lights (in the stadium) were making it difficult to keep them open. and where he was having pain (in the back of his neck).
"But you can't speculate on injuries like this. We'll see what happens next week. We'll just keep Kyle in our prayers and hope that everything turns out OK."
The Pioneers only had six first downs, and 91 yards offensively, including 38 yards on the ground. Watson was Watauga's (2-5; 0-2 NW3A/4A) leading ball carrier with 30 yards on eight attempts. Chambers ran for 20 yards before his injury.
"We just put our defense in a bad position," said Greene, who was 5-11 for 53 yards with an interception. "They were on the field a lot. We have to start moving the ball and eating up some clock."
The Pioneers, mired in a three-game losing streak venture to Newton to play Fred T. Foard next Friday night. The Tigers are winless (they're 0-8 overall; 0-3 in league play). They lost to St. Stephens 42-26 Friday night in Hickory.
"We just have to keep working hard to get off this losing streak," Watson said. "I'm confident we will."
The Pioneers defeated Foard 27-14 in the first meeting ever between the schools last season. Our coverage begins at 6:30 pm on Oldies 100.7 FM next Friday night.

NOTES: WHS leads the all-time series 9-8.....But the Panthers have won two in a row against the Pioneers. They haven't done that since 2004-05.....WHS suffered its first shut-out loss since losing 31-0 to Ragsdale in the opening round of the Class 4A state playoffs last November. It's also the third time the Pioneers have been shut out since 2008. They dropped a 49-0 decision to A.C. Reynolds in their final Northwestern 4A Conference game in 2008.....WHS senior Jordan Pineda, despite the loss, turned in a strong effort defensively. He had 12 tackles; Robbie Sherrill had 11.
