 Senior Dustin Childress, starting for the injured Alex Villanueva who broke his collarbone at practice on Tuesday, turned in a respectable performance Friday night against Black Mountain Owen in the Western Highlands 1A/2A Conference opener for both teams.
Childress was 6-8 for 116 yards and he threw a pair of touchdown passes in a 24-21 loss. The Vikings (4-1 overall; 0-1 in league play), had 294 yards of total offense. Andy Gonzalez caught four passes for 102 yards and two touchdowns. Colton Blackburn led the ground game with 85 yards on 13 carries. Quarterback Kaleb Fowler scored the game-tying touchdown for Owen on a two-yard run with eight seconds left in the third quarter. Gerald Cruz kicked the game-winning field goal from 23-yard away with 6:05 left in the contest. Fowler paced the Warhorses (3-2; 1-0) with 187 yards of total offense and he scored twice. The Vikings return home to play Thomas Jefferson next Friday night.
