Senior Bailey Hagaman of the Watauga High volleyball team has been named the MaxPreps/AVCA Player of the Week.
Hagaman had 39 assists in Watauga's win against Alexander Central Tuesday night. She had 83 assists in the tri-match last Saturday at Newton-Conover. Hagaman had 53 assists in a five-set loss to Newton-Conover, falling just three assists shy of the school record of 56 assists in a match that she set last season during her junior year.
Hagaman followed up her big day on Thursday by leading WHS to a three-game sweep of Hickory on Thursday night. The Pioneers (15-2 overall; 5-0 in the Northwestern 3A/4A Conference) defeated the Red Tornadoes 25-13, 25-23, 25-17. The win leaves WHS in sole possession of first place in the conference standings, owning a one-game lead on second-place St. Stephens which is 4-1 in league play.
Hagaman had 30 assists, three blocks and five digs in Thursday night's win.
"She is definitely our quarterback," said WHS coach Kris Hagaman. "We feed off of her, and she feeds off of us. So far, it's been a strong combination. And the honor is huge for Bailey and our program. She was the only player selected from the state of North Carolina."
The PIoneers return home to play St. Stephens Tuesday night as the wrap up first-round play in the NW 3A/4A Conference.
