Presley earns SoCon and National Honors PDF Print

On the strength of accounting for 365 yards of total offense and four touchdowns and engineering a comeback from a pair of late 21-point deficits, Appalachian State University quarterback DeAndre Presley (Tampa, Fla./Middleton) has been named the Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the SoCon office announced on Monday.

Making his third-career start — and ASU’s first since the graduation of two-time Walter Payton Award winner Armanti Edwards — Presley completed 22-of-29 passes without an interception for 340 yards and two touchdowns in Saturday’s 42-41 win over Chattanooga. The junior also ran 11 times for 25 yards and two more scores. The 340 passing yards rank 21st in school history while the 365 yards of total offense are tied for 23rd.
Most importantly, Presley led the Mountaineers all the way back from the two 21-point deficits by steering the offense to 253 yards and five touchdowns over the final 17:29 of the ballgame.
Appalachian trailed 28-7 late in the third quarter when Presley engineered an 86-yard scoring drive that cut the deficit to 28-14. Chattanooga stretched the lead back to 21 points with a touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter but Presley led ASU to four more touchdowns over a 7:51 span to take a 42-35 lead.
Presley scored what turned out to be the game-winning touchdown on a bizarre play with 6:05 to go, completing a short pass to wide receiver Matt Cline (Thomasville, N.C./Glenn), then scooping up Cline’s fumble and weaving his way through the defense for what officially went down as a 33-yard touchdown pass to himself.
Presley is the SoCon Offensive Player of the Week for the second time in his career. Filling in for an injured Edwards in the 2008 regular-season finale at Western Carolina, Presley totaled 314 yards of offense and four touchdowns to lead ASU to a 35-10 win and earn SoCon Offensive Player and Freshman of the Week recognition. He remains one of seven players in SoCon history and the only one since 1991 to earn two of the conference’s weekly awards in the same week.

In addition to the previously announced Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Week award, Appalachian State quarterback DeAndre Presley (Tampa, Fla./Middleton) has also been named the National Offensive Player of the Week by The Sports Network
Presley and the Mountaineers host Jacksonville for ASU’s 2010 home opener on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. at Kidd Brewer Stadium.
