The old hospital has been closed for nearly 10 years and during that time, it has been heavily vandalized. Greg Greene, who owns the property, told the station Mejaski had no reason to be in the building. Greene said, “I've had many conversations with John Mejaski, and I just can't believe it's him and that he would even risk his career in something this small.” The State Bureau of Investigation said the district attorney and Banner Elk police asked the bureau to handle the investigation.
