Greg Holland has fulfilled his boyhood dream.

Holland, who played at McDowell High School and then put together an impressive career at Western Carolina University, has been called up by the Kansas City Royals. Holland was a 10th-round pick by Kansas City in the 2007 MLB Draft. He was playing with the Omaha Royals of the Triple-A Pacific Coast League this season. He was 3-3 with three saves and a 3.81 ERA. He also had 60 strikeouts in 56.2 innings of work. In his last 10 games, he produced 30 strikeouts in 16 1/3 innings while allowing just two earned runs and limiting opponents to a .161 batting average.
Holland was a vital part of Western Carolina’s 2007 Southern Conference championship squad,  which also claimed an NCAA regional berth. Johnny Greene of Watauga High School, and who is currently in the Texas Rangers organization, was Holland's teammate on that 2007 championship squad.
A closing reliever, he saved 10 games in 2007 and was named first team All-Southern Conference. His 10 saves in 2007 rank second in the school’s seasonal record books with nine in 2006 ranking tied for third all-time. Holland’s 19 total saves in three seasons continues to rank fourth in the WCU career record books.
He will be in uniform tonight when the Royals take on the Baltimore Orioles at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City.
