Madison Bumgarner had it in cruise control.
The lefthander, who was born in Hickory, NC, had won four consecutive starts. And during that stretch, he had given up just seven earned runs in 33 2/3 innings of work. Unfortunately, Bumgarner ran into a pretty impressive opponent in Thursday night's 5-0 loss to the Florida Marlins. Winning pitcher Anibal Sanchez of the Marlins threw a complete-game shutout. He walked one and struck out eight. The only hit he allowed, a bloop single by Pablo Sandoval in the fifth ining. Despite the loss, Bumgarner's numbers were pretty good. He went six innings, and gave up three earned runs on six hits. He walked two and struck out five as his record falls to 4-3 on the year. |
