Three Appalachian State University baseball players were named all-stars in the Southern Collegiate Baseball League.
Will Helms, Tyler Tewell and Ryan Stetson, who are all playing for the Lake Norman Copperheads, were selected to play for the Eastern All-Stars. The all-star game was played July 14 in Spartanburg, SC at Wofford College. The East defeated the West 4-2.
Helms, a rising junior, is 5-0 with a 2.74 earned-run-average in ten appearances. He's only given up 14 earned runs in 46 innings of work and he has 46 strikeouts and walked only seven during that stretch. He's also driven in six runs; Stetson, a rising sophomore, is batting .336 in 31 games with 37 hits, including seven doubles, four triples and five home runs. He's driven in 26 runs and he has a .609 slugging percentage; Tewell, a rising sophomore, is hitting .255 in 30 games with 27 hits, five doubles and 17 runs-batted-in.
Tyler Zupcic of ASU, a rising sophomore, is also playing for the Copperheads this summer. And despite not being named an all-star, his numbers have been stellar non the less.
In 28 games, he's hitting .311 in 28 games with five doubles, a home run and nine RBI. He also has 17 stolen bases in 18 attempts.
The Copperheads, the regular-season and post-season Eastern Division champions, are playing the Asheville Redbirds in the SCBL finals. It's a best of three series, which begins tonight at 7 pm at Hopewell High School in Huntersville, NC. Lake Norman advanced to the finals by knocking off the Carolina Stingers 6-2 Monday night in the opening round of the SCBL playoffs. Zupcic drove in two runs. Tewell and Stetson each scored a run; and they defeated the Morganton Aggies 4-1 in the Eastern Finals Tuesday night. Stetson scored during a three-run rally in the seventh that snapped a 1-1 tie.
