App State Advances to 2nd Round of NCAA Playoffs Print E-mail

The Appalachian State football team was in a fight all afternoon with the MEAC champion South Carolina State Bulldogs, but after a botched Bulldog field goal attempt, the Mountaineers were able to take advantage, win the game 20-13, and advance to the second round of the NCAA playoffs.

With senior quarterback Armanti Edwards still suffering from a pesky knee injury he sustained two weeks ago at Elon, it was up to the black shirt defense to step up.

The Apps’ defensive unit held South Carolina State to 229 total yards and forced five turnovers.

The Mountaineers were able to hold South Carolina State’s senior running back, and Walter Payton candidate, Will Ford, to only 22 yards on the afternoon.  Ed Gainey led the Apps’ defensive unit with nine tackles and an interception.

The Mountaineer offense struggled at times today as Edwards, who didn’t seem to be playing at full-speed, only ran the ball a handful of times.  Edwards completed 19 of his 30 passes for 218 yards and a touchdown, but also threw three interceptions.

Edwards’ favorite targets were Brian Quick, who hauled in six catches for 92 yards and a touchdown, and Blake Elder, who added five receptions for 57 yards.

Junior running back, Devon Moore, was able to pick up 61 yards on the ground, most of which were in the first half.  In the post game press conference, Appalachian State Head Coach Jerry Moore said the Apps’ starting running back sustained a thigh bruise late in the first half, so the coaching staff didn’t utilize Moore very much in the second half.

The game was knotted at 13 with just less than eight minutes left in the game when South Carolina State was set to attempt a go ahead field goal from the Mountaineer 15-yardline.  The Bulldogs fumbled the snap and redshirt freshman defensive back Dominique McDuffie scooped up the ball at the 50-yardline and returned it for a touchdown.

That touchdown proved to be difference in the game as both teams played to a stalemate for the remainder of the game.

After the game, Coach Moore talked about how his team was fortunate to come away with the victory.  Moore said, “When you get down into playoff time you have to be good enough and you have to be lucky enough. Both of those things worked out in our favor today.”

The Mountaineers will travel to Richmond for a date with the defending national champion Spiders on Saturday.  The game time has not yet been announced, but High Country Radio will pass along that information once it is made available.  The Apps defeated Richmond by 20 points in the semifinals of the 2007 playoffs, but the Spiders ended the Mountaineers’ season last season with a 20-point win in the second round of the playoffs.

That was the worst college football game I have ever seen! ASU will get smoked if they play like that next week. Coach Moore better get control of his team, because they looked very ****y to have played so poorly.

I wouldn't say worst but probably one of the sloppiest games I've seen in a while. The turnovers and penalties on both sides were horrible, but it was a win!!!! Let's hope ASU can dial it in for the next game!! GO APP!!!!

The ASU team that embarrassed Elon two weeks ago is the team that had better show up in Richmond next weekend. It's crunch time now...do or die. It's payback time!! Let's go squish some spiders!!!

Wow..
It was an ugly win and the Apps were very fortunate to win and move on..
A Edwards did not seem to want to run late in the 2nd half when game was on line, quite a few times he would drop back and wait, wait wait instead of exloding to the open area and get some positive yardage and potential big plays..
To beat Richmond, they will need to control the line of scrimmage, tackle better, cut down the penalties and put some points and big plays on the board.
The Spiders QB like to run the ball but can actually throw the ball effectively, unlike the QB and offense from SC State..
Richmond 34 - ASU 26 ...

paulman1: Edwards is still suffering from a knee injury which he sustained in the game against Elon. This was very obvious in the game yesterday. I am proud of the players that stepped up to make the win happen despite numerous penalties (some of which were very questionable), Armanti's injury and a good SC State team.
And as I heard a fan in the stadium say, "It doesn't matter how but how many".
Congratulations App!

When Armanti did his mid-air forward somersault against Richmond in the playoffs two years ago, ASU was blowing the Spiders away. When Kevin Richardson did his little chicken dance in the Delaware end zone in the championship game, ASU was on the verge of blowing the Blue Hens away. But for Dominique McDuffie to pull off his somersault stunt Saturday when the Apps were only going to be up by a TD was nothing but stupid, as in S-T-O-O-P-I-D. Somebody from the coaching staff should have, and perhaps did, get in his face big-time.

I guess ugly is in the eye of the beholder. If ASU was ugly, how does one describe South Carolina State? Congratulations to both teams for an emotional, hard fought game. I invite those that criticize in such a negative manner to suit up and do better. Constructive criticism is fine. Whining because conditions due to injuries, etc. are not up to your expectations is not.

"I invite those that criticize in such a negative manner to suit up and do better."

Can't wait to cite that gem on a different thread, Bill. Maybe multiple times....

Thank you. After all, imitation is the most sincere form of flattery.

They got personal fouls called after both touchdowns for excessive celebration, which showed a total lack of discipline. Not to mention all the other penalties from the sloppy play. I hope I'm wrong, but I predict the Apps get blown out by the Spiders.

Don't worry, Fo Chisel. You are wrong.
Vikingmom | 12/01/2009 12:24PM
Fo Chisel, you are wrong about the excessive celebration calls. There were 2.However one was on the Bulldogs after the TD followint an interception.
Vikingmom | 12/01/2009 12:25PM
Sorry "following"!
