According to the accident report filed with the Boone Police Department, two vehicles were traveling southeast on Blowing Rock Road when a northbound vehicle struck them.
A witness told authorities he saw the driver of the northbound vehicle with a can of aerosol held up to his mouth and appeared dazed. The accident report states the northbound vehicle was traveling an estimated 50 miles per hour, while the posted speed limit for that stretch of highway is 35.
21-year-old Jonathon Prakash Kocherla, of Leesburg, Georgia, was driving the northbound vehicle. He was charged with driving while impaired, reckless driving, speeding, inhaling toxic fumes, and possessing drug paraphernalia. Kocherla is a junior psychology major at Appalachian State. He was taken to Watauga Medical Center.
The drivers of the two southbound vehicles, 19-year-old Ashley Christina Lockerman and 46-year-old Richard Brian Barker, were also taken to Watauga Medical Center.
No word on any of their conditions. High Country Radio will pass along more information when it becomes available.
