Although the rockslide on Interstate 40 near the Tennessee state line has caused traveling headaches for many travelers, one area town is working to make the most of detoured travelers.
Officials with the Johnson City Chamber of Commerce’s Convention & Visitor’s Bureau are encouraging travelers to take time to stop at a few of their local businesses.
They are calling their new campaign, “The Best DeTOUR is Johnson City.”
Officials are so excited about the possibility of a huge influx of money to the local economy, they have even created a website that offers tips and directions on places to stay in Johnson City. Interested residents can go to www.DeTOURI140.com.
Johnson City officials say if a typical traveler spends $20 in their town, the result could be a $48 million boost to the local economy.
As a quick update on the status of the rockslide cleanup, NC DOT officials are working on the cleanup operation around the clock, but still expect the road to be closed for at least three months.
