Burke County Man Dies in Canoe Accident

A Burke County man died Tuesday afternoon after his canoe reportedly capsized in Johns River.

According to reports from our sister radio stations in Lenoir and the Morganton News Herald, 79-year-old John Collins and 71-year-old Don McGalliard were squirrel-hunting Tuesday when the accident occurred.

Authorities believe the canoe capsized, sending both men into the water. Collins reportedly drowned and McGalliard suffered minor injuries.

Burke emergency crews found the men about 150 yards from where the canoe flipped.

It is tragic that this man died, but aside from that, squirrel hunting in a canoe on the river! I have heard of flying squirrels but not swimming ones.
