Loretta Clawson Comments on 2009 Election with an Eye Toward Boone’s Future Print E-mail
Written by Adam Hicks

Wednesday, November 04 2009

Loretta Clawson will serve her third term in office as Boone’s mayor after winning the 2009 election in convincing fashion.

When asked how the campaign went, Clawson said, “I thought it was a great campaign.  My opponents were very gracious and very nice people.”

Clawson said she actually looks forward to November during election years and explained, “I really enjoy campaigning… I like elections, I like campaigning.  You know, I’ve worked on other people’s campaigns, and I really, really enjoy it.  It’s been a lot of fun.”

When asked about her plans for her third term, Clawson said, “We’ve got the new master plan, we’ve got the new urban forestry plan, [and] we’ve got a lot of greening going on.  I just look forward to continuing to make progress in the Town of Boone.”

Mayor Clawson also said she was excited to see Jamie Leigh, Rennie Brantz, and Andy Ball elected to fill the three vacant Boone Town Council seats.  Clawson explained, “The town council is the hardest working town council I’ve ever seen in my whole life; so yes, I think everything’s going to be really good.”

Contrary to prior terms, Clawson’s third term will be a four-year term instead of two.

...and she wants to improve traffic problems by building more sidewalks, crosswalks and parking areas outside of the town limits and allow AppalCart to commute more daily workers. She also sees the Daniel Boone Bypass as a detriment to local businesses. Within the next two years, Loretta sees the improvement of Downtown Boone and Howard Street as a top priority.

Oh, wait... that wasn't Loretta who wants to help the Town of Boone. What was I thinking?

Congratulations to Mayor Clawson and all the winners and participants of this years elections..
I just want to know if the promise by
Loretta for a New "McDonalds Restaurant"
on Hwy 421 (near the new High School)
will come to fruition by the end of her
4 year term.. My money says yes...

Congrats to all the winners of yesterday's elections, and thank you to all those who didn't make the numbers for a win but who were willing to put themselves forward for public service. It takes a lot to throw your hat in the ring, and I, for one, appreciate all the candidates' willingness to do so.

I want to puke everytime I see, hear or read about that woman. Typical fake-ass politician. "we've got a lot of greening to do". Give me a break! Maybe if more than 10% of the registered voters would come out we could get rid of this woman.
wildman   Registered | 11/05/2009 9:13PM
10% is pretty damn shameful but the people have heard all of this same BS for 20 years Revitalization of downtown, Howard St. and Parking. Step up ToB fix it and roll on. Or maybe we need to pay for one more parking survey and consultant to tell us what to do because we're too lazy to figure it ourselves.

Got Got Got

Wow that word drive me nuts, especially over and over as in her quote.

Hey Loretta, try the word "have" on occasion
NoBS   Registered | 11/04/2009 8:51PM
I don't think you got any class.
AppGirl   Registered | 11/04/2009 6:40PM
Hey, where's her picture? You mean to tell me that she won the election and there's no picture to go with this article!!! Oh, my, she just might go into withdrawals.
Artie_Lange   Registered | 11/04/2009 7:48PM
There's a pasty white pic of her on the Democrat's site.

Loretta Clawson was re-elected due to her Democratic Party connections. ASU students voting was very minimal. The sad reality is most of the full time Boone residents DID NOT care to vote for their future, instead relying on a few (less than 10% of the current Boone population) to decide their future for them. Loretta's policies for Boone are party dictated and have nothing to do with the well-being of our town. Ms. Clawson continues to support the bypass AROUND Boone with no REAL long-term traffic solution, potentially costing our small businesses money (and costing our state millions), riding the fence with ASU and Downtown Boone, and only supports the Steep Slope ordinance because she was caught with her hand in the contractor cookie jar when she helped approve the building of apartments/condos above Walmart.

Unfortunately, the lack of care among full-time Boone residents has given Ms. Clawson a four year opportunity to royally screw this town such as when Former President George W. Bush sent our country into a tail-spin.
wildman   Registered | 11/05/2009 9:16PM
In this age of "Yes we can" why do we always get "No You Can't" when building in Boone?"
NoBS   Registered | 11/05/2009 9:49AM
Clawson did NOT "help approve" the apts above Wal-Mart. The UDO allowed such construction, so the project was approved when it applied for a permit. Yes, it was a fault of the UDO and once the problem became apparent, the Town Council tried to fix it through the steep slope ordinance. Yes, the UDO needs to be reworked (or re-written), and that is what the Council is currently doing. To blame Clawson for the Wal-Mart apartments is absurd.

As for the continuing traffic problems, the Council is trying to work towards more sidewalks, public transportation, denser in-town building and bike lanes and greenways. I have no idea where Clawson stands on the bypass, but I don't believe a bypass is the solution to the traffic problem.
wildman   Registered | 11/05/2009 9:20PM
They also started work on Downtown revitalization, parking and the Howard St problems 20 years ago, is a new UDO going to take that long? When betting at the tracks always check the stats. of the horse your betting on.
NoBS   Registered | 11/05/2009 9:56PM
The property owners won't sign the Howard Street easements.
wildman   Registered | 11/06/2009 7:56AM
I guess other towns don't run into these problems, they all just get along? No, it takes diplomacy and compromise and a "Yes We Can'' attitude. Come on, really, 20 years?
Fried Chicken   Registered | 11/05/2009 11:23AM
Check your facts again:

A couple of the town council members questioned heavily the construction above Walmart, but miraculously reversed their way of thinking just in time to have the permit approved. Money talks. Permits walk.

How many studies have been done concerning the UDO? How many years? It is time for action instead of studies. We all know building homes, businesses, et al, on the sides of mountains is not conductive to our tourism industry OR our safety. Common sense. If this were in Clawson's neighborhood, it would be a no-brainer.

No link needed. Ask the previous mayor. Or any of the town council members at the time.

I prefer some direct evidence instead of gossip, and I can't find any evidence what you said is true.
snuffy   Registered | 11/05/2009 1:35PM
It was a pathetic turnout in an important election. Clawson is a puppet and a ribbon cutter not a leader. Four years is gonna be a long, long time.
NoBS   Registered | 11/05/2009 2:04PM
The voters overwhelmingly chose Clawson. Get over it.
wildman   Registered | 11/05/2009 9:21PM
Hold her to to the issues and make your voice heard.
Fried Chicken   Registered | 11/05/2009 2:18PM
Sorry. No gossip... just hard truth. As snuffy so eloquently pointed out, Clawson is nothing more than a puppet with Williamson's local Democrats' hands all in her.

And, yes, the 1,505 voters that turned out (that is so depressing that more didn't care to get out and vote) overwhelmingly supported Clawson (52% versus Tim Wilson's 32%). The one thing that can be said is Williamson's core base got out the vote for their puppet.

And, I'm over it. Moving on...
NoBS   Registered | 11/05/2009 3:20PM
At least Williamson doesn't whine when she loses.
wildman   Registered | 11/05/2009 9:22PM
because she hasn't...yet
NoBS   Registered | 11/05/2009 9:50PM
Yes she has. Twice by my count.
NoBS   Registered | 11/05/2009 10:09PM
She got her ass kicked in 2002.
Fried Chicken   Registered | 11/06/2009 8:22AM
My goodness... who is whining? We're just stating facts.

ASU students voting was very minimal. Fried Chicken

Could you furnish the numbers? I think voting in general was minimum. I would like to see the numbers of those that voted on campus compared to the other polling places and the time frame campus voting was open. I do not care who the students voted for, but I do care they got preferential treatment.
Ali Baba   Registered | 11/06/2009 8:59AM
What about the preferential treatment given to those who live/work near downtown Boone? They had two early voting locations. Campus early voting was open the same dates/times as the other early voting locations.
NoBS   Registered | 11/06/2009 10:09AM
Actually, the other early voting sites were open for 2 weeks. The campus site was only open for one week.
Fried Chicken   Registered | 11/06/2009 9:15AM
One stop voting commanded the most votes.

http://results.enr.clarityelections.com/NC/Watauga/11045/18625/en/md_data.html?cid=0109&

Unless ASU students (which according to attendants at the early voting places were very few) voted at other venues, they were not in attendance. Now, about the preferential treatment, if there had been early voting in other areas, then there might have been a difference in the outcome. I seriously doubt we will see anything changed in four years because of this.
