Sounds like a great effort. If anyone on GBR has information related to other "angel tree" gifting opportunities for readers to contribute to, please post it on this thread and forward the details to your local email lists.

I don't know anything about "Angel Tree" but I do know that someone needs to account for "BIGNATE" on this Shelter Rock giveaway...

Has anyone ever been to one of these give aways? Lots of preaching first? or can you just pick up and leave? What's the food like? I was very disappointed in the quality of food from angel food ministries. Everything was loaded with msg and preservatives, etc.

Bignate?

Ummmmm yeah let me tell you about this "give away"

First off let me just say that next time something like this is announced PLEASE!! let EVERYONE know that it does NOT start at 6 -- the "preaching" starts at 6 and does not end until 8 which is when the food is distributed. I'm sorry but that is pushing religion on people. You don't have to go to the service at 6 but you do need to be there by about 8 or so to get food and you have to fill out paperwork and sit in a LONG line of cars. At least I dont think you have to go to the service. But they do this every Tuesday night.. have service and give out food. And the food is not like the stuff from Angel food ministries. its food from grocery stores, but like the hunger coalition, check it before you eat it -- most is out of date or close to it. I went last night and that was the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen in my life.

By the way for anyone who cares, please pay attention to the people loading the cars, there was a kid last night eating the food he was putting in the cars, needless to say that was trash. I watched this kid stick his fingers into a grocery bag and eat whatever he pulled out -- it was egg noodles. Ugh gross. Not even cooked but still not the point, he was eating out of the bags he was giving to people. And I wouldn't have kept it anyway -- open noodles dumped into a grocery bag. Not bad the stuff we got though otherwise. I think they had more chicken than anything. And I am sorry if it sounds as though I am complaining, but I am. Pushing religion and having kids eating out of the bags of food they are giving away!!! Ludicrous.

Thanks, Tigress! Your account is what I expected. What kind of paperwork did you have to fill out??
Tigress Il   Registered | 11/04/2009 5:08PM
Just a piece of paper asking my name address name of spouse and names of all adults and kids in the house. If your getting any kid of public assistance and that about it -- you sing it -- kind of like a waiver saying that Shelter Rock is not responsible for the food you receive or any damage done to personable property such as your car. You get better food than at the hunger coalition but the religious part is what kills me ...

Tigress, did you really have to sing it? That's bizarre. And personable, was your property personable? Sweet.

How legitimate is this organization?
Tigress Il   Registered | 11/05/2009 6:25PM
well they have been there for about 7 years ish but and get all the food and stuff through donations from grocery stores -- as for legit -- I have no idea
abacab   Registered | 11/05/2009 8:15PM
A Christian organization trying to help people? That's a novel idea. Please don't go back Tigress because you obviously took food away from some people who really need it and want it and are Christians. In addition you obviously have a computer and internet, which many of those who attend don't so you are probably better off than most who attended. I don't know of anyone who complains about free food anymore.

Ahh, America, where people are too proud to beg and too lazy to work.

That should be AmeriKa.
