ASU to Cut Down Trees to Make Room for New Dining Facility Print E-mail

After consulting with a certified arborist, Appalachian State University officials have decided they will cut down three trees to make way for the expansion to the new Central Dining Hall and Sanford Commons.

According to Michael J. Connor, the director of ASU’s Physical Plant, two dogwoods and one sugar maple at the edge of the new Dining Hall will be taken down.

University officials made sure to point out that since 2006, the school has planted 248 new trees on campus, and that 22 trees will be planted around the new addition to the Central Dining Hall.

Must be a slow news day if this is all they could come up with. The only reason this would even be thought of as an issue is because of all the tree hugging liberals on campus.

I agree, cswm. What a joke to make the cutting down of 3 trees a news worthy story....What is this world coming to?

I would rather see an article about someone's lost pet than about three trees that will be removed. Pets bring a lot of joy and happiness to their owners.

ASU released a statement about the trees yesterday. The trees are unhealthy; construction around them will just make it worse. I've copied some of the text below:

The Physical Plant Certified Arborists have continued their evaluation of campus trees that are in decline and/or threaten public safety. The trees listed below are proposed for removal this fall. These trees are in the current project site for the Central Dining Hall

latest expansion. Please note that these trees were already in decline. In addition, the renovation of the existing steam line running through the construction site could not be accomplished without further disturbing the roots of these trees. Unfortunately, these trees are not good candidates for transplanting.
