Watauga County Sheriff Len Hagaman has a few Halloween safety tips to keep everyone in the area safe this weekend.
Sheriff Hagaman said motorists should be extra cautious when driving and keep an eye out for trick-or-treaters.
Parents should also make sure children have an adult or older youth with them while trick-or-treating. Parents should also tell children to only stop at houses or apartment buildings that are well lit and never to stop at a stranger’s home. Parents may also want to pin a slip of paper to the child with the child’s name, address, and phone number in case the child gets separated from the group.
As far as costumes go, make sure children wear fire-retardant materials that are easily spotted in the dark. Masks and make-up should also not impede breathing or talking ability.
Children should eat an early meal before they trick-or-treat so they don’t get hungry and eat candy before parents have a chance to check the treats.
The sheriff said residents should also be careful when lighting Jack O’ Lanterns because they could catch fire if lit with a candlelight.
