The H1N1 flu vaccine has made its way to the High Country, but the quantities are very limited.
According to the Public Information Officer with the Appalachian District Health Department, Jennifer Greene, Alleghany, Ashe, and Watauga counties haven’t scheduled a vaccine clinic because the health departments are receiving small quantities of the vaccine.
Greene explained officials are trying to get the vaccine to high-risk residents like pregnant women, children, healthcare workers, people who work with children, residents with chronic health issues, and parents with small children.
Greene said residents who may not fall in one of these high-risk categories are welcomed to call or stop by the health department and ask about receiving a vaccine.
All three health departments are also offering seasonal flu shots for children and adults.
Next year, Greene said, she expects the H1N1 vaccine and the seasonal flu vaccine will be combined.
Greene also urges residents to continue practicing healthy procedures like washing hands frequently to prevent the spread of germs. She added that if you get sick, stay at home to keep from getting others sick
Officials with the Avery County Health Department were unavailable for comment.
