Hound Ears officials and planners broke ground this morning on a new facility to house the gated commuunity's new security office
The project will replace the current security office, seen in the background, a facility subject to flooding and much too small for the needs of the officers who serve the community. Officials say that the current building has been in use for 45 to 50 years. Hopes are to have the new security office open in early 2010.
'Tis a shame Hound Ears is not in the Boone city limits. Sorry Loretta, no photo op here.

I am so excited! I have been waiting and waiting for this glorious day! Finally, rent-a-cops for wealthy summer people will get their new house!

Great idea! And then could I get it reported as news? Could I? Could I?

They're not all summer people. TO's dad is there year-round.

I think it is great that someone is puting local contractors to work and that the security is getting a better workplace. They work just as hard as the cops do.

The assumtion that any of these folk do not have the slightest idea about a regular, even struggling life, is potentially wildly wrong. Responding to comfortably-off retirees performing a locally insignificant ceremony by heaping on the scorn, smacks of envy and jealousy. We assume the silver spoon was there from Day 1. Most of us would love to be able to retire and be able to enjoy the much aspired middle class dream of balmy winters of way down South, with the cool Summers of 28604,5 & 7. In any case, how do we know we're not witnessing the macabre act of digging a 6ft hole for the last gateman who was caught chewing gum on the job?

Honey, I'd LOVE to be able to spend winters down south and if I didn't have kids in school I would. I actually have no beef at all with summer people.
However, this is a wildly bizarre "news" item by any standards, particularly when appended with a half-dozen photos as if it's a major event, don't you think?

Chrissy - You're right. I'm afraid we live in the 'Man-Bites-Dog' news zone. Next up will be some guy who lost his wallet somewhere. Definitely a missed photo op for Lowes re the shovel sponsorship. My kids are in school too. Perhaps we could get Camp Broadstone to offer a Winter boarding program so the much-deserving parents can chill out in Boca from Nov - April? It's just sitting there empty anyway.

Any good news is nice to hear when there are so many not so good things happening in our world. Most of the people that live in Hound Ears worked years to be able to have a home in such a wonderful place and now they are up here in this beautiful area spending their money and helping our economy.

Good news, sure, Bickle. That would be: wife beating stats down, impoverished kid finds fat wallet and returns it, more land is tucked into conservation easement, hard-working retirees from Hound Ears sponsor theatre class for local kids (and I'm not being facetious - I am well aware that many summer people are fantastically generous).
Not: we have a spanking new guard house because we grew up in Miami and are terrified of people we Don't Know.
I'm just saying; there are (or should be) better things to report on.
