Hagan Cosponsors Environmental Protection Bill Print E-mail

North Carolina Senator Kay Hagan is cosponsoring legislation that will help to permanently protect some of America’s premier public lands and shield more than 150,000 acres of the Pisgah and Nantahala National Forests from development.

The bill, called the National Forest Roadless Area Conservation Act of 2009, will also help preserve more than 58.5 million acres of roadless areas across the country, including 723,000 in Southern Appalachia.

The bill does, however, permit new roads to be constructed to fight fires and ensure public health and safety.

Hagan spoke favorably of the bill in a press release and touted the importance of protecting undeveloped areas.

"This legislation will permanently protect the forests of North Carolina, which are natural treasures in our state," the democrat said. "These roadless areas in our state and across the country should be preserved for future generations."

This is GREAT news! I would hate to see the pro commercial wind professors at APPY state find a way to get a commercial wind plant on a high ridge or mountain in a National Forest. I do not trust them. I love the word "permanent" protection since there have been so many attacks on the 1983 Mountain Ridge Protection Act.

If you want to see pictures of a commercial wind plant on a mountain ridge....please go to www.keepersoftheblueridge.com Please note the acres of cleared land required for each wind turbine.

I would love to know Mt. Hardy in the Pisgah National Forest would be forever safe.....it is such a wonderful mountain to climb. Wonder why I love it? LOL!

I think its very unfortunate that we have to have the government step in and protect our untouched land. But I kinda like bills like this... This whole notion of bigger and better, and build more and expand and add on, is just crazy. When will we be content?

Though this contrasts with my, government stay out of my bizness, attitude.

I would probably be OK drilling in Anwar so... Im feeling a little confused right now.

This great new -- lands need protection.

I think it is great because if we do not protect these lands, we will soon have no wild areas to explore with our kids and grandkids where the habitat is undisturbed.

How will this effect those that own private property surrounded by National Forrest lands that are served by old roads and jeep trails? Many of these roads are not recognized by the forest service. Will this constitute a taking if the forest service does not allow vehicular access to the property? Can the forest service stop access to old cemeteries?

If this had been proposed by Virginia Foxx there would be an outcry here against it of massive proportions.

Bill.....it is something you will need to look in to.....ask questions.

Molon....even if FOXX had suggested this, I think it would be supported.

In Va and WV, they tried to put a commercial wind plant in the George Washington National Forest. The proposal was rejected because it would have opened up a wildlife habitat area, visually dominate the Shenandoah Valley and threaten federally protected bat species.

National forests need to be protected from commercial wind plants and their 400 foot tall turbines. Please see www.keepersoftheblueridge.com for pictures.
