Wilkes County Schools Start Monday with New Hours Print E-mail

In the midst of cuts in state funding, the Wilkes County School System has a novel idea that officials hope will save $900,000 this upcoming year.

Wilkes County Schools’ Superintendent Dr. Steve Laws said by extending school by 45 minutes every school day, students will go to school 18 less days over the school year.

Laws explained that since the school will be in session 18 less days, they will save money on transportation, electricity bills, substitute teachers, and teacher assistants.

The new school calendar doesn’t come without casualties, however.  Laws explained that some teacher assistants would go from working a 10-month schedule to a 9-month schedule.  Even with the cuts in payroll for these employees, Laws said the new plan was able to save 30 jobs within the school system.

Laws also explained with the traditional 180-day school schedule, students were in class for 1,030 hours per year, but under the new plan students will be in class for 1,040 hours.

Wilkes County Schools is the first school system in the state to try this tweaked schedule, and Laws said he knows that every other school system in North Carolina will have their eye on Wilkes County this year.

Laws said, “We intend to prove to everybody that our kids will perform just as well and we’ll save a bunch of money.”

Laws said it took legislative action for the school system to get permission to change their schedule.  He said State Senator Steve Goss was especially helpful in convincing state lawmakers to allow Wilkes County Schools to try this new schedule.

Students in the Wilkes County School System begin school on Monday.

WOW! you thought your kids were tired after school last year, wait until they get home next week! Poor babies!

180 days for 1030 hrs is less than 6 hrs a day. Another 45 minutes of class time will not hurt them. On average, China's children spend 8.6 hrs /day at school, with some spending 12 hrs /day in the classroom. Until NC test scores rank higher than they are now, I think the kids & teachers should have longer school days.

From a budget standpoint, saving 900k & saving jobs is a good thing.

Awesome idea.

CRASH, if it evident that you haven't spent time in the classroom with the children. And I thank God , this isn't China. have a super weekend.

MYTHOUGHTS, if it is so unbearable to spend 6 hours a day in a classroom, maybe you shouldn't be a teacher.

Maybe if they were in session those 18 extra days, someone would learn that the correct usage is "18 fewer days," instead of "18 less days." As for longer school days, someone who has never taught should have to spend at least a few hours alone in a classroom before expressing an opinion. Whateverlife, I don't see where anyone said six hours with students was "unbearable," but it is certainly one heck of a challenge in today's world.

My wife is a teacher in Wilkes Co loves the new schedule. More time in each class to teach and more vacation days during the holidays!

so what is the new schedule? someone I work with said they are only going 4 days a week now? Are they doing that or just cutting the 18 days from the end of the year? I think its a great idea.

Perhaps teachers who don't have the enthusiasm to teach SHOULDN'T be teaching anymore. Most Wilkes teachers I've spoken to look forward to being with their students more during the day. Matter of fact, one of them said, "That's why I became a teacher."

Still 5 days a week, me! School begins later in the year and gets out earlier (May), with a few more holidays off in there too.

Spending 6 hours with a child to teach them is not that hard. If you don't like it then find something else to do. Actually if you consider lunch and PE, kids are only being taught 5 hours of a school day. Sound like an awesome idea to me and parents might even save some daycare/after school money.

Personally being the parent of two school aged children I think this is a wonderful idea and I hope it will help out some parents who could use that extra 45 minutes in the evening to get home before a kid gets off of the bus. After school costs are outrageous and the children get no help with their homework, even though that is part of what they say they are there for. Hopefully with the extra time some of this can be addressed at school and more parents can be home with kids afterschool rather than paying crazy amounts for someone to sit with them afterschool for an hour and do nothing. I hope it goes well and continues to grow to other counties.

I don't think this is a good idea. These extra 45 minutes a day divided up over probably 5 classes more or less is only 10 minutes (best case) extra in each class. They are not going to learn anything in 10 minutes compared to the regular 1 hour long class they would have during those 18 days. To me this is a waste of time, sort of like school on Saturdays.
