The National Park Service, the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation, and the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation are focusing on childhood obesity.
A $200,000 grant from Blue Cross and Blue Shield will direct a multi-dimensional program to engage children and their families in activities that increase physical activity, improve nutritional choices, and increase awareness of the Blue Ridge Parkway as a recreational resource.
According to a press release from the Blue Ridge Parkway, the program will initially begin in Asheville, but is expected to span the entire length of the 469-mile long Blue Ridge Parkway.
The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation is working to improve the health and well-being of North Carolinians by addressing the health of vulnerable populations, supporting physical activity and nutrition programs, and helping nonprofit organizations improve their organizational capacity.
Since the foundation was established in over eight years ago, more than $34.4 million has been invested into communities across the state.
