The unemployment rate for the state continues to increase.
According to the Employment Security Commission of North Carolina, North Carolina’s unemployment rate was up to 6.9 percent for the month of August. This is as high as the rate has been since January 2002, when the rate was seven percent.
Employment over the past month decreased by over 45,000 workers.
According to the ESC, this is the eighth consecutive month that overall unemployment has increased.
ESC Chairman, Harry E. Payne Jr. said, “While some of the employment loss can be attributed to students returning to school, we know the decline in the national economy is having an impact on North Carolina’s employment picture.”
Payne explained the state is experiencing a very tight job market with a lot of job seekers.
Over the last year, textile mills and furniture production are among the industries that have experienced the most job loss, while health care, local government, and food services experienced the most job gain.
The nation’s unemployment rate also increased to 6.1 percent over the past month.
