Foxx Co-sponsors American Energy Act Print E-mail
Written by Adam Hicks

Congresswoman Virginia Foxx joined House Republicans in introducing a comprehensive energy bill to reduce the price of gas Wednesday.

The American Energy Act aims to increase the supply of American-made energy, improve conservation efforts, and promote new technology that will help bring down the cost of gas.

Foxx said, “This legislation offers a broad set of solutions, with everything from new drilling to new investment in the fuels of the future.”

The new legislation is intended to address high gas prices in three key areas: increasing supply, reducing demand and investing in alternative energy sources.

It increases supply by opening deep water resources and the Arctic coastal plain.  It is estimated that these sources hold the potential to provide an additional 6.5 million barrels of oil per day.

The new legislation is said to provide tax credits for the purchase of fuel efficient vehicles, home-based solar power and biomass, energy efficient buildings, and energy efficient appliances.  The American Energy Act also offers a cash prize for the development of the first mass-produced car that gets 100 miles-per-gallon.

good to hear and read
Is there anything in this Act to force
car manufacturers to increase their averages on miles per gallon on all their models from cars to trucks---
(example--say a 5 mpg increase by year 2016 and 10 mpg increase by 2022)
Unless the car manufactureres are mandated and forces to do this, they won't,and will continue turning out gas guzzlers...
They can add tax credits to the manufactures who reach or exceed their goals as incentives and maybe throw in
some low-government loans for research
and developemnt to improve effiencies.
For the housing and building industry, why doesn't every new building use solar technology.. start with all government buildings such as schools, police, fire, prisons, post offices. It will be a start and then maybe the private sector can join in...

I believe Foxx supported the Bush line of not mandating more MPG than currently in force. NOW she wants an energy act?? Hmmmmm? Is there an upcoming election??
She is such a PHONY!
Foxx Hunter | 07/23/2008 4:30PM
Postscript: Just because Virginia Foxx sponsors a bill, it doesn't mean she will vote for it. This is a favorite game of hers - play either side of the issue when it is convenient. Propose one way, vote another. Don't believe this scam artist!

to Hunter (that was a good cop show)
you are correct, you are seeing many politicians and especially Repubicans
getting on the alternative energy bandwagon, since the early 80's, we have had a Repubican controlled Congress and Senate who have catered to big business, oil companies, defense contractors and to the military industrial complex.. We are now paying the price for all those profitable years and being too short-sighted in developing new goals and initiatives pertaining to a US Energy policy...
We simply have not had one which is contributing to the mess we have today... and while I am at it, you can
say the same thing about a lack of well tought out Environmental,Educational,
Judicial,Intelligence,Diplomatic,Social Security,Medicare,Diplomatic,etc,etc
I need to take another walk....
But at least she (Ms Foxx) is doing something now.. what choice does she or anyone else really have....(she actually reminds me of a "white"
Mrs Sanford.. doesn't she ....)

Thank you, Congresswoman Foxx!
why | 07/23/2008 5:31PM
Why hasn't someone come up with viable energy alternatives? Is it the governments job? Why are solar energy companies and companies producing wind and geothermal energy not taking their share of the market? Oil companies are doing what oil companies do, extracting, refining and selling oil and oil related products. Why don't alternative energy companies step up and do the same with their products? Everyone complains about the oil companies but what better feasible alternative has been presented?
I would sure use alternatives if they were reasonably priced and reliable.
Chester | 07/24/2008 10:45AM
Who says the oil companies will sell any oil they find off our shore or in ANWR to Americans?
They could just find that magical extra 3%, that going to save us all), then sell it to China.
Its called business, you sell your product to who pays the most for it.
Gass Guzler | 07/23/2008 5:33PM
Yeah, if this passes Phil Templeton is going to build an oil derrick on top of Howard's Knob.
Bulldog | 07/23/2008 5:40PM
Oil companies have been in bed with this administration since day one. They put Mr. Bush in office and he has given them all the tax breaks and sweetheart deals they wanted. He even started the Iraq war for them. There is evidence that oil companies have actively suppressed development of alternate energy sources. See the movie "Who killed the electric car" for one example. Mrs. Foxx has enabled these short-sighted policies at every opportunity.
What? | 07/23/2008 5:42PM
Started the Iraq war? Lay off the kool-aid pal or what ever you're taking.
Boone Expat | 07/23/2008 6:09PM
This whole idea is a non-starter.

To begin with, we do not need to increase the supply of gasoline available to Americans. As energy costs have increased, Americans have done what they do best, adapted to the situation and begun to conserve. The supply of gasoline in the United States currently sits near 24 days, better than two days more than the average for this time of year, despite a marked decrease in production.

America alone, without help from Congresswoman Foxx, has managed to reduce demand for gasoline 300,000 barrels a day from 9.6 million barrels last July to 9.3 million currently. If fuel prices remain high, or go higher it is reasonable to expect the American public will reduce demand further of their own accord.

Investing in alternative energy sources is all well and good. ADM and Monsanto both have biodiesel and ethanol production capacity, and farm products (genetically modifiedhigh ethanol yeild seed corn comes to mind), and they really need more government subsidies. The corn and soybean lobby are huge, and make the tobacco lobby look like the women's missionary union.

Home based solar power is great, if you have the temperment and lifestyle to support its limitations. Biomass? Heck us Watauga hillbillies have been burning firewood without the need for a government issued axe since the 1780's.

100mpg car? Chrysler, Ford, and GM will form a consortium, throw their best engineering teams at it and have one coming off the line in five years. Unless that preturbs their shareholders that are diversified in oil company stocks as well.
David | 07/23/2008 6:38PM
Did she come up with the idea to sponsor it herself or did Haliburton give her the idea along with a big wad of cash?
Hey Paul | 07/23/2008 8:09PM
Paul says the Republicans controlled Congress since the early 80's. The dems had a massive control of the numbers all during the 80's. Get your facts straight BOZO!!!
Great | 07/23/2008 8:17PM
Paul is back. He is all over GBR and neglecting his children again.
Aquanut | 07/23/2008 10:06PM
We really don't need the government to mandate gas mileage requirements. The American public can do that by simply not buying the gas guzzlers. Much easier and avoids more costly government oversight.
Foxx Hunter | 07/23/2008 10:49PM
To What? OF COURSE the Iraq war is about the oil. It's ALWAYS been about the oil. And Cheney's Haliburton. AND satisfying the "base." And showing daddy and the rest of us he is the best President ever! (Knows more than anyone else, too!) LOL
Paul | 07/23/2008 10:55PM
to Hey
double check your info, since Reagan became President in 1980,
and thats 28 years ago, The Repubicans have had majority in both houses 16 of these years (about 60% if my math is still ok) and they have had their turn in turning a blind eye to a Energy plan which would make America more independent from these radical mid-east zealots who have been pulling our chain since the 70's .... and we still are kissing their behinds....
Thought | 07/24/2008 7:58AM
What have they done since they have been in there?-NOTHING-just an election year gimick -then when they get in there its the same ole same ole-its time to go -after they get back in there there will be no energy plan of the GOP.I'm voting for new people -to see if they can come up with something that beats what has been in there. If that is all the republicans have (Foxx,Dole,McHenry McCain)- I will be voting Democratic.
pegleg | 07/24/2008 9:31AM
Now if we could just get Ginny to hold another town hall meeting in Boone.

Maybe if there's a sale at Belks...
Watauga Resident #2 | 07/24/2008 10:22AM
Pandering yet again, Rep. Foxx? No thanks, Virginia. It's time for your voting record to catch up to you. Good-bye!
Anonymous | 07/25/2008 4:56PM
Her opponent is against drilling in ANWR. He has never even been there so how can he know. The radical environmentalists like Carter is the reason the Democrats will not vote on drilling in the US.
To Anon: | 07/26/2008 8:34PM
Have YOU ever met Carter & TALKED to him? Radical, he's not. Why don't you stop the Republican rhetoric and find new adjectives, you right-wing, tree-killing, oil-rig loving, Bush-kissing Ditto-Head.
Jimmy Carter deux | 07/27/2008 12:39PM
Yes, I have talked to Carter and he is a radical environmentalist. All he talks about is the environment. If you want to hug a tree with him, go for it. I want real American solutions to solve our energy situation. We have resources and we should use them. We should also conserve and find alternatives. But ANWR is a frozen desert. The pictures the mainstream press show you are not where we would like to drill.
QueenTigress | 07/27/2008 9:38PM
:!: Well it seems the American public can do nothing but sit back and *****!!!! No matter who we vote for or who wins we are screwed no matter what. Unless we get someone who really means what they say (good luck with politicians on that one) thats all we are gonna be able to do anyway. *****, moan and complain. I really wish for once we could get a real person in office who actually gives a crap about America, the people, the jobs, and the economy. For pete sake is there ever gonna be anyone out there like that???? Probably not in our lifetime.

Anyone want a good look at our future - go read a book called "The Parable of the Sower" by Octavia Butler. Thats what our "America" is going to turn into if we dont get people to give a damn.
Paul | 07/28/2008 10:56AM
Mayor Bloomberg has a backbone and says what he means and does what he says... You may not agree with anthing he says, but the man has leadership, good judgement and the ability to get things done...
Publius | 07/31/2008 5:34PM
It is good to see that Virginia Foxx is committed to a common sense plan to help our energy needs and economy. Roy Carter, however, is committed to doing whatever the Sierra Club tells him to do. The citizens of the 5th District deserve an outstanding conservative leader like Virginia Foxx as their representative in Congress.
