Sigmon promises no endorsements Print E-mail
Thursday, May 08 2008

Incumbent 10th District Republican Representative Patrick McHenry may have secured his bid to keep his seat, but he didn’t secure an endorsement from his challenger, Lance Sigmon.

McHenry defeated him, 34,275 votes to Sigmon’s 16,818 votes Tuesday. Just because Sigmon refuses to support McHenry doesn’t mean he’s throwing his hat in with the Democrats.

“I’m not going to help them either, I’m just not going to endorse him.”

The race for the Republican bid was wrought with controversy. McHenry has fallen under recent fire from the national media, critics and bloggers for recent incidents that include calling an Iraq security guard “two-bit” during a speech in Lincoln County. While Sigmon’s campaign tried to use the criticism to promote an alternative Republican, it wasn’t enough to stop McHenry.

McHenry faces off with Democratic bid Daniel Johnson in November.

We heard Sigmon speak several times and each time he was slinging mud at McHenry. I am totally turned off by all of this negative talk. I want to know what these people running for office are going to do for me not what they want to say negative about their opponent. I think McHenry has done a great job. He is always helping my county and I appreciate that. Just stick to the issues and leave the personal attacks at home.

Sigmon tricked a sick Ballenger into endorsing him, plus had people trying to slander McHenry's sexuality. I'm glad that "class" guy is gone! McHenry doesn't need the jerk's endorsement. Sigmon got his butt whipped and now is acting like a petulant child. Go away, LOSER!

Don't know anything about Sigmon, but I'm glad McHenry's not MY representative and I sure wish he wasn't any part of our government.

Well...#1 and #2 can report to their boss now and tell him they did their best to defend his "not so stellar" reputation. If McHenry cares so much about the mountain people then why does he never attend Republican Party functions here? If he and his staff are so concerned about the area, why have they done nothing to assist local farmers regarding getting legal status for migrant workers? Unless McHenry starts representing the entire district, then don't be surprised if Daniel Johnson gets a large number of Republican votes on November 4. You can't blame Sigmon for McHenry's lack of maturity in Iraq nor can you blame him for the photos of McHenry that are now being discussed all over the internet. As the saying goes, where there is smoke, there is fire. The people of this area deserve better representation than what they get from the self centered Mr. McHenry who cares only for his own political advancement.

I can promise you that I am not a part of McHenry's staff, but I do like him and I think he has done a great job and a lot for Avery County. We all have to make our own minds up, but try to get to know him before you pass judgment and listen to rumors. Look at how he votes and what he stands for. I am very impressed with the young man, and I fully support him.
I know him Unregistered | 05/08/2008 7:41AM
lgs, if you say you are not part of his staff then that is good enough for me. I also agree that we need to get to know a candidate before we praise or criticize him. However, I assure you I know Mr. McHenry (I have heard him speak many times and have met him personally) and everything that has been said about him ignoring the Republican Party of Avery County as well as the farmers is true. As far as his sexual persuasion, that I do not know about. I do know rumors have existed about it since he started in politics. The pictures that are floating around on the internet do seem to enforce what has been said about him though, at least on the surface. I hope for his sake and the district that those accusations are wrong.
embarrassed Unregistered | 05/08/2008 8:10AM
McHenry's an embarrassment to the area with his yippy dog attacks of other congressional representatives and procedure on the floor and in the press. And like all the other "allegedly" closet gays in the Republican party, he makes himself a laughing stock by being 'tough on homosexuality' when we all know some very public scandal is inevitable. I couldn't give a rat's whatsit if he's gay, but just have the courage to accept it if so, dude! Makes me wonder what else he's not honest about.

Name any other elected official on the state or federal level at any time in the past 50 years who has done more for or even traveled to Avery or Mitchell Counties much as Partick Mchenry has. I challenge any of his critics to dispute that!

OK, so the man can drive (I'll take your word for it) but what exactly has he done?

Are you talking about his infamous credit union bill, an idea that suported bankers' profits rather than his own constituents?

I think the peoples opinions of Mchenry were reflected in the vote tally. He got more than double. Sounds like sourgrapes to me. Sigmon needs to show some class.

AS FOR MR. SIGMON-SOUR GRAPES. AS FOR "MIGRANT" (ILLEGAL ALIENS)WORKERS, I HAVE RECEIVED AN E-MAIL FROM A LADY WHO WROTE THE EDITOR OF A NEWSPAPER. SHE SAYS WHAT MOST AMERICANS BELIEVE QUITE WELL. CHEAP LABOR, THAT'S WHAT IT IS ALL ABOUT. IF I CAN GET IT TO THIS SITE OR TO ANYONE WHO WANTS TO READ HER E-MAIL, I WILL.

MCHENRY HAS DONE A GREAT JOB. IF YOU ARE A VET AND VISIT THE VA HOSPITAL, DON'T GO TO THE NEW CLINIC THAT WILL BE OPEN IN HICKORY, BECAUSE PATRICK MCHENRY GOT THE CLINIC HERE AFTER HE WAS TOLD "NO" SO DON'T GO TO THAT ONE, BECAUSE YOU SAID HE IS BAD. HE HAS DONE MORE FOR THE FIRE DEPARTMENTS. SO YOU SIGMON LOVERS, SHUT UP. THE BEST MAN WON

If you're going to pretend to be another person agreeing with your own posts, the caps thing is a dead giveaway.
Funny Unregistered | 05/08/2008 4:31PM
Isn't it funny how "VESTED" and "COMBAT VET" both type the same? [smiley=think] If you can type with your right hand, you should be able to reach across and lock and unlock the shift key also! [smiley=wink] Or maybe you are just another McHenry staffer trying to cover the boy wonder's tracks by pretending to be two people? If you are a veteran, I thank you for your service. If you are not, then shame on you for pretending to be one. If you are a veteran and McHenry has helpled you, then you are one of a very small group of people. Hopefully he helped you more than he "helped" the security guard in Iraq...or the two officers that were killed in the same building he pointed out in his infamous video.

As far as cheap labor, I know many people in this county that pay their migrants $13 per hour to keep good help, plus providing them living quarters and a vehicle to drive. (this is more than most county employees make) They have tried for two years to get legal status for their people spending thousands of dollars in legal fees...all to no avail. How much help was McHenry? None! (see there...you can make a point without using all caps) You folks need to remember how much the economy of Avery County depends on Christmas tree farming. No migrants...no tree farming. It is that simple. I totally agree that they should be paid a decent wage and treated fairly but I think most are...unless you listen to the dribble being put out by those that just want them out of the country. (like your "lady" who wrote the newspaper) Not all of them are criminals like we are led to believe.

As far as McHenry "helping" the fire departments...perhas you need to check into how the grant process works. The grant is applied for by the fire department. They spend hours preparing the grant applications and submitting them. If the grant is awarded, then some politician like the boy wonder gets the check and delivers it to the fire department so he can get his picture taken by the local paper...then people like you that don't understand the process give him credit for something he did not do. In other words, McHenry's part was as a delivery boy...nothing more. Learn to give credit where credit is due.

As far as the Veteran's Clinic in Hickory is concerned, it is desperately needed. It is my understanding it has been in the works for years, while McHenry was still in diapers. To the best of my knowledge, it is not open yet so don't praise the boy wonder until you can actually walk in the door.

As far as being a Sigmon lover, no, I didn't particularly care for him.

YES I AM A COMBAT VET AND I DON'T KNOW VESTED. I DON'T WORK FOR MCHENRY OR ANYONE ELSE. I AM A 100% DISABLED AND PROUD OF OUR CONGRESSMAN. YOU MUST NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT MORTOR ATTACKS, SO YOU BELEIVE WHAT "LANCE THE LIAR SAID". WHEN YOU SHOOT INDRECT FIRE, YOU GET LUCKY, THEY GOT LUCKY AND KILLED TWO OF OUR BELOVED SOLDIERS. ARE YOU STUPID ENOUGH TO THINK THEY DON'T KNOW WHERE THE BUILDING ARE. JUST LIKE NAM, THEY HAD THE INFO. YOU NEED A FORWARD OBSERVER TO HIT TARGETS. YOU ARE JUST LIKE LANCE AND TALK ABOUT SOMETHING YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT. THE VA SAID NO CLINIC, AND PATRICK KEPT FIGHTING FOR THE VETS. I SUGGEST YOU BACK UP AND REGROUP. I DON'T APPRECIATE YOU MAKING FUN OF MY TYPING.

IF you are truly a disabled vet, then I sincerely apologize for the remarks about your typing. However, I still say if you can type as well as you do then it should be no problem to switch over and unlock the caps lock key.

Maybe vested is a disabled vet also?

Regarding the mortar attacks, I guess the State Department was just wrong when they instituted the rule that no videos of damage to specific targets were to be shown. Do you also think the boy wonder was proper in referring to a security guard as "two bit" when all he was doing was his job to keep McHenry safe?

Believe what you will about McHenry...but I know the truth.
To Combat Vet Unregistered | 05/08/2008 6:53PM
IF you are truly a disabled veteran then I sincerely apologize for any remarks I made about your typing. I still find it curious though that you and "VESTED" type exactly alike and started posting here at the same time...but I am not in the habit of calling anyone a liar (unlike you) so I will again offer my apologies if I have accused you in error. It would however make your posts much easier to read if you would simply unlock the caps lock key on your computer.

As far as what McHenry did in Iraq and whether or not it aided the enemy, I will defer to the Department of Defense and their rules against doing what McHenry did. Perhaps what he did made no difference...perhaps it did. All I know is that there were rules against it and he broke the rules. This has nothing to do with Lance Sigmon. All he did was attempt to use it to political advantage. It has everything to do with grandstanding by a political candidate...Patrick McHenry.

Do you also think McHenry was in the right when he called a security guard "two bit"...a security guard that was trying to protect McHenry?

Once again, if you are a veteran, thank you for your service. I still think you are giving McHenry credit for something he did not do regarding the VA clinic but it is clear you have closed your mind to the issue so I will just leave it there.

Sorry for double posting Unregistered | 05/08/2008 6:57PM
I sent two replies to Combat Vet in error. I did not think the first had worked so I retyped it and added some to it. I apologize for the error.

ALL YOU GOT OUT OF THE TWO BIT GUARD WAS A SOUND BITE. MCHENRY KNEW THAT THE GUARD HAD SAVED HIS LIFE AND IF YOU HAD HEARD IT ALL, HE WAS SAYING THANK YOU. HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU SAID RENT-A-COP, WHICH IS THE SAME THING HE SAID. WHY SAY MCHENRY WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR TWO DEATHS WHEN HE WAS NOT. MY UNIT WAS HIT ONE TIME BY FRIENDLY FIRE AND 2 MARINES WERE KILLED AND 13 WOUNDED. WE DIDN'T ACCUSE ANYONE OF MURDER LIKE SIGMON DID MCHENRY. THE NON-COMBAT VETERAN SIGMON OWES PATRICK AN APOLOGY FOR HIS COMMENTS. POLITICAL ADVANTAGE OR NOT, HE WAS WRONG.

FYI, I HAVE NO IDEAL WHO VESTED IS. I SPEAK THE TRUTH

To 27 Unregistered | 05/08/2008 7:15PM
Actually I don't use the word "rent-a-cop" at all. I have more respect for them than that. As far as the sound bite, McHenry said what he said at a political rally when he did not know he was being filmed. I have a hard time understanding how calling someone "two bit" is "thanking them" for saving one's life. If it makes sense to you then I fear you are too far gone to ever learn the truth about McHenry. [smiley=happy] To me it just speaks of McHenry's huge ego.

Like I said before, what Sigmon said is of no consequence at all in the matter. He used the incident for political purposes...and he lost. I heard of what McHenry did several days before Sigmon latched onto it. However, the fact still remains that McHenry said what he said and he broke the rules set down by the Department of Defense. You can't blame that on Sigmon...only Mchenry.

If you say you aren't Vested, then I take your word for it.

Confused by Sigmon Unregistered | 05/09/2008 6:26AM
I understand that Lance Sigmon has issues he dislikes about McHenry. That explains why he ran against him in the primary. However, both being conservatives, I found that the two agreed on the issues pretty much all the time. Does Sigmon really think that McHenry is not better for our nation than the Democrat who would help keep the liberal Democrat leadership in place for two more years?

It is time for Sigmon, David Huffman, and company, to get over their losses. It is time to realize that even if they think they would be better, that the option right now is between McHenry (who votes similar to what they claim they want) and Johnson (who would not vote the way they claim they want).

The primary is the time for our party to hash out its disagreements. After the primary, we need to come together and support the best candidate still available, whether we supported the person in the primary or not. If Sigmon is the conservative he campaigned to be, he would endorse McHenry. If Sigmon wants conservative bills to even reach the House floor, he would want McHenry to help elect a Republican leadership so we can see these bills reach the floor.
To #28 Unregistered | 05/09/2008 6:46AM
In a perfect world what you say would be correct. Unfortunately, there are many of us that see McHenry for what he is, an opportunist using the 10th district for political and financial advancement. I guess you could say that after looking at his list of contributors and then looking at his voting records, we see him as the best congressman money can buy! Unfortunately it takes a long time for the hurt inflicted by McHenry's negative campaigning and outright lying to heal. He needs to realize that before he starts whining about the party not uniting behind him. If he loses to Johnson in November he has no one to blame but himself. He can't blame Sigmon or Huffman, only himself. He has already started his negative remarks against Johnson. Don't get me wrong, I am a Republican, but I am not proud at all of the way McHenry campaigns or conducts the affairs of government, or the way he conducts his personal life. I have one vote and I will not waste it by casting it for someone that does not uphold the honor of the office, regardless of which party he represents!
Negative against Johnson? Unregistered | 05/09/2008 6:49AM
What untrue remarks has he said about Johnson??
To #30 Unregistered | 05/09/2008 7:12AM
He has already put out a statement that Johnson was hand picked by Pelosi to run against him although Johnson says he chose to run after being approached from people from his area. Who knows...maybe both are lying. It just seems odd that the first thing out of McHenry's mouth after the primary was to envoke the name of "Pelosi" in discussing his opponent. That is "negative" in my book. I'm sure that before long our mail boxes will be full of brochures (some of which will be "printed at government expense") from McHenry telling us what all he has supposedly accomplished for the district while he throws in remarks about the unspeakable things Johnson has done and we will start receiving those irritating automated phone messages he is so famous for. I wonder how long it will be before McHenry accuses Johnson of losing his legs while in the military just so he can use it to political advantage? [smiley=think]
Response to 31 Unregistered | 05/09/2008 11:14AM
If Johnson pledges to NOT vote for Nancy Pelosi as the Speaker, then we can talk as to whether this is an unfair attack. Until then, Johnson is the candidate Pelosi wants. We need a Congressman who will stand up to ultra left wingers like Nancy Pelosi. Whether you like his style or not, McHenry will do that. Will Johnson do that, or would his very first vote if elected be to elect her to the top position in the House?

BTW, did Johnson ever deny that Nancy Pelosi recruited him? Saying locals approached him is not a denial that Nancy Pelosi is behind this. Remember, a vote for Pelosi is a vote for higher taxes, along with prevention of bills important to conservatives from even getting a vote on the floor. If Johnson would support her as speaker, then a vote for Johnson is a vote for Pelosi.
to 32 Unregistered | 05/09/2008 11:32AM
And a vote for McHenry, friend to bankers rather than his constituents, is a vote for the neo-cons - I can't call them conservatives - who have been raping this country for the last eight years.
To #31 Unregistered | 05/09/2008 11:44AM
I think #32 summed the whole argument up nicely. All you have to do is look at the PACS that support McHenry to figure where his allegience lies. It is certainly not with the people of the 10th district but more with his own political ambition and his bank account.
Excuse me Unregistered | 05/09/2008 11:46AM
