Unprescribed drugs: Not a new problem Print E-mail
Monday, April 28 2008

An incident last week at Watauga High School has officials asking parents to monitor their medicine cabinets.

Thursday, two students were hospitalized due to reactions from unprescribed medication.

The two 14-year-olds had been taking Adderol, a drug intended to treat attention deficit disorder. An investigation into how the minors obtained the drug led to charges for seven students, all under the age of eighteen.

Prescription drug abuse isn’t a new phenomenon among high school students. Last year there were several arrests at Avery County High School after students were discovered trading pills they’d obtained from their parents’ medicine cabinets. Authorities say it’s important to talk to your kids about the dangers of unprescribed medication, and to be aware of what’s in your medicine cabinet.

The Adderol wasnt prescribed for parents dummy it was prescribed for the children. Check out the blog in the soapbox titled Public Schools Push Medication of Children. This is the end result. Blame the adults, Parents, School Officials, teachers and counselors, and most of all the medical community. The "Authorities" are way off on this one. These drugs are routinely give to children.

Not necessarily. Adults also take Adderol.

However, judging by the number of kids charged, it sounds as if they'd been passing it around - either their own meds or their parents'.

Ive met many people whom have been prescribed these drugs.
All began as adolescents, all gave them or traded them to their friends, most never needed them to start with.

It's spelled "ADDERALL"

I agree with # 4. Most kids don't need it to begin with. Many students get this prescribed and then sell it or crush it into a powder and snort it. The school hierarchy has found out the easiest way to deal with any disruptive behavior is to throw drugs at the children. It is obvious that public education has got some serious flaws and they seem to bury their heads in the sand. Admit your flaws, and let's all help solve them together.

the fact of the mater is theis kids illegly used a prescribed med!! if its was not prescribed to the , then they desided to use it illegaly. let them pay the price!! CLEARLY they were taken not for the purpose they would have been prescribed for !! so i ask what punishment would you inforce. the LAW or a slap on the wrist. to save the embarsment most parents would go with the slap on the wrist and keep it behind closed doors. my view as a high school parent has been ,to let them deal with the law ! and be their to help them get through the tough times it will cause in a family, or they will not respect the LAWs. much less the parents!

The schools are almost never the ones wanting to give these drugs to kids. Usually the parent has had it with their troubled kid and then they talk a doctor into prescribing it. The school has little involvement. Remember, a parent must take the student to a doctor who then agrees to the parent's assessment. Sometimes they ask the school, and maybe will send an evaluation for the teachers to fill out. The final decision then rests with the doctor and parent.

Is the drug problem (and I mean all drugs) at Watauga High School incredibly huge? I am considering a move there with a 16-year-old, and am frankly frightened by what I am reading. I understand meth is a huge problem. Anyone with true insight please respond.

12, most people in Boone and Watauga County have nothing to do with illegal drugs.
Meth is not a huge problem here.

"Resident" where do you live, another planet. Just 3 years ago Watauga County was the biggest producer of meth in the state.Meth labs were being busted routinely almost every week. I used to live in Watauga County and if there had been a high school closer for my children to have attended, they would have gone, no question about it. And not for reasons you might think.
