85 illegal aliens discovered in 4 tractor trailers, one local Print E-mail
Sunday, February 24 2008

Four men face alien smuggling charges after 85 illegal aliens were discovered inside four tractor trailers. One of the trucks was local.

The arrests were made jointly by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) Border Patrol.

ICE officials say the four stops occurred within a five-hour time span in Laredo, Texas. On-site canines assisted officers in discovering the illegal aliens.

Little specific information has been released by ICE, but a photograph released shows one of the tractor-trailers involved says Pittman Trucking, Newland on its side.

Rick Pittman of Pittman Trucking says he was contacted by ICE officials soon after the arrests were made two weeks ago. According to Pittman, his driver was approached at a truck stop and was told he could make extra money if he would leave the truck and come back. Once the truck was filled with illegal aliens, he was instructed to drive them to San Antonio. Pittman says the driver was promised $300 per alien smuggled. It’s something Pittman takes very seriously and, although the driver in question had been an employee for 10 years, Pittman says he will never again work for Pittman Trucking.

ICE officials told Pittman they thought it was the driver’s first offense and that he had “learned his lesson.” According to Pittman, the trucking company has a zero tolerance policy in such incidents.

The four men charged with alien smuggling in the incident are 47-year-old Danny Pendergrass of Tennessee, 36-year-old Jesus Tristan of Mesquite, Texas, 55-year-old Lee Anderson of Alabama and 40-year-old Arturo Martin of Miami.

ICE officials are still investigating the case and are not releasing specific details at this time.

$300 p/p, Wow!
Guest User Unregistered | 02/25/2008 5:58AM
I wonder how often this same thing happens, and the truckers are NOT caught. This is disgusting.

I could see how you'd need the dogs to sinff 'em out--were they packed in coffee beans?

Well if the Great American Worker (now there's a joke) asnt such a lazy drug addicted loser then they wouldnt be coming here. everyone says they work cheaper etc.etc... but the truth is hey they at least show up for work which is more than i can say for the last three white guys I hired, and the MEXICANS DONT STEAL NEARLY AS MUCH.

I have to agree with #5. People against immigration should try to run a business.
Guest User Unregistered | 02/25/2008 8:04AM
# 6 what you just said is the problem . if i pay some illegal a cheeper wage (cash) then i can keep more profit for MYSELF! because its MINE all MINE hahahahah no one can take it away from ME !
Guest User Unregistered | 02/25/2008 8:19AM
#7, that is not what #6 said. He said that he agreed with #5. That statement is true, atleast they will work. Most farmers I know would love to hire locals, however to much like real work. Locals will not show up. Get off the money issue. Americans are just lazy.
Guest User Unregistered | 02/25/2008 8:31AM
5 & 6 are perfectly correct. Mexicans work hard and they show up. Americans complain about their rights constantly and never mind the rights of the one who's paying to get a fair day's labor.
Guest User Unregistered | 02/25/2008 9:01AM
#8 is a bone head
Guest User Unregistered | 02/25/2008 9:12AM
If they are here by correct methods and take our jobs, then good for them, if they are here by the way this story is told, then they should be put back in the same truck and sent back. let the driver pay for the trip back. The big loser in this story is the trucking company. I know Rick and he would never be involved in a tastless thing like this. to bad his good reputation has to be brought into this. there are plenty of trucking companys out there that are involved. $300 a mexican sounds like slavery revisited to me.
Guest User Unregistered | 02/25/2008 9:21AM
I wonder who is paying the $ 300 per person?
Guest User Unregistered | 02/25/2008 9:27AM
Why is #8 a bonehead? I didn't see anything about his comments that should draw such a response.

[smiley=angry] Ohew, that just makes my blood boil. I am so sick of the illegals. WHY don't they try so hard to change their OWN country?
Guest User Unregistered | 02/25/2008 9:55AM
Mr. Watts- Maybe you should try to change it for them - go on down there and start a business? You could relax on a nice beach as well sometimes and cool that blood down - it's not good for you to boil it.
Guest User Unregistered | 02/25/2008 9:56AM
#10 is right on. Also, if Americans are lazy, what are all of us doing at work??? Saying Americans are lazy is a very narrow-minded statement. Also, not all farmers can hire another person to work for them. Most of the farmers who hire these illegals, are getting some type of government funding. Do your homework folks.

15 - Farmers are getting government funding to hire illegals?
Guest User Unregistered | 02/25/2008 10:03AM
# 15- apologies. I should have been more specific. Not all Americans are lazy, far from it. But the ones who are complaining that they are losing jobs to Mexicans (on building sites, tree farms etc.) are outclassed in terms of work ethic. Yep, they're lazy- love, the Bonehead
Guest User Unregistered | 02/25/2008 10:09AM
How many Mexicans can you put in a truck sleeper?
Guest User Unregistered | 02/25/2008 10:30AM
How much do you people think a honest days work is worth? If you think $9.00 an hour is good ,your full of it i made $9.00 in 1991. Its all about cheap labor and YOU the employer should be fined $10,000 per illegal worker payable in 10 days then we would see this immigration take a different turn.
Guest User Unregistered | 02/25/2008 10:46AM
I would guess from the posts above most of you are profiting from the unarmed invasion of our country. It seems as long as someone else pays the cost or the American taxpayer subsidizes your cheap labor then it is OK. Illegal aliens cost this country more then the Iraq war.

No, I'm not profiting in the least-I don't even eat all that cheap chicken that most of you love to scarf down at 39 cents a pound.

However, I have a lot of business owner friends who have a dreadful time finding and then keeping workers that doen't constantly call in sick (hungover) or just not show up and that don't constantly goof off.

Competition is a terrible thing for lazy workers.
BajaRat Unregistered | 02/25/2008 11:17AM
Illegal aliens are criminals, one and all. They turn once pleasant suburbs into gang-infested barrios full of chickens, goats, old uninsured beater cars, blaring ranchera music, and soaring crime rates. They tend to irresponsibly reproduce like rabbits, put a huge strain on our social safety net, refuse to assimilate, and are extremely crime-prone (i. e. stealing IDs or faking IDs in order to steal jobs from Americans and legal residents), and drive down wages for working Americans and legal residents.
These criminals need to be ferreted out, rounded up like cattle, and promptly dispatched back to whence they snuck in from. Enough is enough! It's the law. Enforce it! And lock up those who smuggle the invaders for at least 20 years for the first offense. [smiley=angry]
Guest User Unregistered | 02/25/2008 11:24AM
Having worked in structural steel construction in the mid-1970's I must say that the cost of living has soared since then. But wages in the field? They're about half what they were in 1975 compared to what they are today. The only folks who benefit from hordes of cheap workers from Mexico and elsewhere are the creeps who illegally hire them. The US worker not only takes it in the butt in wage losses, but also gets whacked for the social costs of the illegals.
Guest User Unregistered | 02/25/2008 11:25AM
LOl 23 sounds like you've been hanging out in some of those Deliverance-style areas here--only they're playing country music and they don't drive down wages because they don't work (at anything legal).

Guest User Unregistered | 02/25/2008 12:25PM
Mr Watts CAN'T own a business in Mexico..unless he has some major cash to drop on it. That's illegal in Mexico. And sitting on the beach? He would also not be allowed to own the property he sits on. It is illegal in Mexico for any non citizen to own oceanfront property. Do you not understand Mexican immigration law?
Guest User Unregistered | 02/25/2008 12:39PM
Too funny 26 and 29 - please don't apply for a job as attorneys any time soon. Mr Watts certainly CAN legally own property in Mexico via a bank trust. No, he can't own property on the beach, but who said you have to own property there to go to the beach?

Hush up before you ruin the tourist trade as well as life for all those hundreds of thousands of AMERICANS who are currently buying up property in San Miguel etc (and raising prices on the locals I might add).

anyway, you don't have to won property AT ALL in order to start a business. Look at Doe Ridge pottery etc.

If a farmer or rancher refuses to hire a person because he asked him if he was an illegal alien, that person could sue him for discrimination. The department of Labor would help the illegal alien do the law suit. Now isn't the DOL part of the gov't? This was done in South Georgia.
Guest User Unregistered | 02/25/2008 4:30PM
Be interested to see the story on that (is this an actual story or a hypothesis?), but my guess would be that the farmer would only be sued if he refused to hire a Latino in case they were an illegal alien even though the person had real documentation.

I'm guessing that your comment is nonsense, too, but I'm willing to be proved wrong if you have a trustworthy link (NOT to a blog).

These human smugglers are some of the worst scum of humaity. Oh, Iknow, some liberal will come up with the sentiment that they are actually helping these folks into a better life, etc. Yeah, by often abandoning them in the desert to die, or just raping and murdering them. Americans are responsible for letting it go on. Comprehensive immigration reform is NOT THE ANSWER. Rather, jailing and fining the employers of illegal aliens is working in some states and making them go back to Mexico, for example. Speaking of Mexico, Mexico is a rich nation. The richest in all of South America. A Wall Street Journal Article admitted that ninety percent of Mexicans who come here illegally already had jobs in Mexico--they just like Americans jobs and the gravy train of benefits they receive once here,(at the citizens expense) better. What a surprise.

People who depend on cheap immigrants labor for their business do not belong in business. Growers have expanded massively since the '86 amnesty, using illegal labor to undercut market wages, then they scream like weasels when the scam is uncovered. They should never have expanded in the first place.

This is huge news. I am happy they got busted and that a local trucking company fired someone for it. People need to realize that these mexicans are ILLEGAL. If they would like to come into our country legally and obey our laws and pay taxes, then I have no problem. However, we need more illegal busts, like this, and we need to start shipping them out as fast as they can enter our country. Fine every illegal transporter and put them in prison - first offense. Fine every business that employs an illegal and put the owner in prison - first offense. Fine every landlord that gives them a place to live. Put illegals in prison for life for any crime that they commit. Make it a prison where they work for their food and shelter so that our tax money can quit supporting these illegal people.
Guest User Unregistered | 02/25/2008 8:58PM
for the people that support illegals living in our country, let those supporters sign up to use their tax dollars to pay the illegals' medical bills, the illegals' attorney fees when they kill someone, the illegals' prison expenses, and the illegals housing and food expenses. then, let the legal people who work, live, and pay taxes in American, keep that tax money for our own expenses. everyday working Americans would benefit with more take home pay on each check if our tax money was not used to pay expenses for people that have no legal right to be in our country.

I think I might have a solution to all of our illegal problems. We open our borders to all Mexicans, as they enter this country we place them in the army, after 2 or 3 years we close our borders, declare war on Mexico, ship them all over there to fight the war and we don’t have an exit strategy. That’s about the only way we are going to solve the problem, other than that we are all s.o.o.l. [smiley=laugh]

Funny, isn't it...My father has owned a construction business for years and has used the E-verify system to verify his employees' legal status. Though he has had his share of bad employees (of all races and ethnic backgrounds - which he promptly fired), he never had trouble finding hard working American citizens. Of course, has paid them well for their labor, provided them with health care benefits, overtime pay and other perks, all while running a VERY successfule business.

Perhaps those who have posted here condemming U.S. workers are lacking the skills to run a profitable business without breaking the law. It that is the case, your business deserves to fold. Oh, but that would mean YOU would have to find job that pays enough to support their loved ones..which shouldn't be too hard considering so many employers are bypassing cheap illegal alien labor in favor of hardworking American citizens!

85 illegal aliens discovered hidden inside 4 separate tractor trailers
Most of the aliens had been locked inside the trailers with no means of escape

LAREDO, Texas - Eighty-five illegal aliens were arrested here Thursday night as they were being smuggled into the United States hidden inside four tractor trailers. The four groups of smuggling-load arrests were made jointly by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection's (CBP) Border Patrol, Laredo Sector.

According to ICE and CBP, these four stops occurred within a five-hour time span as the trucks were entering the United States from Mexico. During CBP's routine inspection, agents either noticed suspicious activity coming from inside the trailers, or they were alerted by on-site canines on duty. Each of the truck drivers was then referred to secondary inspection.

The first group of 15 Mexicans was discovered at about 7 p.m. hiding inside the cab's sleeper compartment. At about 8:30 p.m. a second group of 12 Mexicans and three Guatemalans was also found hiding in a tractor trailer's sleeper cab. Just before 11 p.m. another tractor trailer was stopped, and 32 illegal aliens were discovered in the locked trailer with no means of escape. The last truck was stopped just a few minutes later, and 20 Mexicans, two Hondurans, and a Salvadoran were found also locked in the trailer. All those discovered inside the trailers appeared to be in good health; they declined medical attention.

Charges are pending against the four truck drivers that attempted to illegally smuggle these individuals. On Tuesday, all four drivers will appear before a federal magistrate to be formally charged.

"This criminal activity clearly re-emphasizes the fact that human smugglers have no regard for human life," said Jerry Robinette, special agent-in-charge for the ICE Office of Investigations in San Antonio. "ICE will continue to work with our law enforcement partners to bring to justice those who blatantly disregard the laws of this nation. "Targeting these smuggling organizations is critical to securing our borders and ensuring compliance with our immigration and customs laws."

This is an ongoing investigation.

-- ICE --

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was established in March 2003 as the largest investigative arm of the Department of Homeland Security. ICE is comprised of five integrated divisions that form a 21st century law enforcement agency with broad responsibilities for a number of key homeland security priorities.

Americans cannot work for the wages that these illegals make. Americans do not live 3 or 4 families to a home, collect food stamps, free health care, subsidized electricity and phone. How do you think they can send so much money back to Mexico? Americans have to pay for what we have. Try doing that on $6 or $7 an hour.

My GAWD! The Fed's [ICE] let the Pittman truck driver go without so much as a slap on the wrist! At a bare minimum, his DOT license should be suspended or revoked! He turned his truck over to unknown parties and let them load it? He had no regard whatever for what he might be smuggling into the US? This is totally unacceptable. THIS IS URGENT---LOOK AT WHAT PELOSI, HISPANIC CAUCUS, ETC. IS UP TO REGARDING ILLEGALS!!!---
FROM NUMBERSUSA!!---In a nutshell, your efforts to push the SAVE Act (H.R. 4088) of Rep. Shuler (D-N.C.) and Rep. Bilbray (R-Calif.) are increasingly successful. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi fears that the current 136 co-sponsors will succeed in forcing a House floor vote on the bill to take jobs away from millions of illegal aliens. She desperately wants to keep the 12-20 million illegal aliens in this country. So, she is maneuvering to attach a 5-year amnesty proposal of the Hispanic Caucus. Her hope is that she will either win with the amnesty or just make the bill so bad that we will help her kill the enforcement.----They are hoping that if the illegals are given the 5-year amnesty---and businesses who are hiring the illegals given "safe harbor"---that they can eventually push for full amnesty/citizenship for the illegals.----PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE.......Register with this FREE site so that you are able to send FREE faxes so that we can stop Pelosi and the Hispanic Caucus. But if we are going to have laws against illegal immigration we need enforce them. I don't have the answer but we can't just throw open the doors and let anyone into this country who wants to be here. Not anymore.

77 Did you ever wonder why Pelosi and Bush, usually bigtime foes, are on the same page on this? Could it be that they have a better grasp of the practicalities of the situation than you do?

maybe Bush and Pelosi both want Mexico, the United States, and Canada to become one single country; known as the North American Union

Oh sure. That makes perfect sense.
