Avery County Sheriff Kevin Frye has issued a warning concerning a scam involving payment of your electric bill.

In a statement released Thursday, Sheriff Fry said that Mountain Electric has received reports of an attempted scam that involves someone seems to be placing random calls to both businesses and residences from phone number 800-342-3625 and saying that he works for Mountian Electric and is at the parking lot at the Rite Aid at Shoppes at Shadowline in Boone, and that you should bring full payment for your power bill to him immediately or your power would be shut off. He even gives his truck number as 15557.

Sheriff Frye says Mountain Electric has confirmed this is a scam and they do not operate in Boone, which is serviced by either Blue Ridge Energy or New River Power and Light. Sheriff Frye's statement indicates that it is possible that if a caller returns the phone call and says they could not find Eric in order to pay him, that they would be given instructions to send a payment electronically, possibly even out of the country.

Frye says this is not the only scam reported recently involving electric bill payments, and that if you have questions about a call you've received, call the Avery Sheriff's office at (828) 733-3858.
