The Boone Town Council approved the 2017-18 fiscal year budget by a vote of 4 to 1 Thursday evening.

While the tax rate and water and sewer rates remains the same, the budget provides a 3 percent pay for performance for town employees, and includes nearly $300,000 from the town’s undesignated fund balance for expenditures approved at the June 5th budget workshop, including $100,000 dollars to the Appalachian Theater, an extra $10,000 to the Southern Appalachian Historical Association and funds for a police position and patrol car.

Council member Jennifer Teague was the one dissenting vote. Teague said that while she supports the Appalachian Theatre and SAHA, she was concerned about giving additional monies when a number of local agencies that provide much needed services to members of the community were denied funding in the budget.

Teague said she is in favor of funding the police position and patrol car, but had to vote no on the overall budget.

The council also approved $115,000 dollars for outside agency funding.
