The NC State House has passed bills that would allow local school systems to begin the school year earlier.

According to the Watauga Democrat, House Bill 375 would allow local school boards begin the school year on a date that coincides with the opening date of a community college serving the area, but no earlier than August 15th.

House Bill 389 would provide for a pilot program to allow 25 school districts to open no earlier than the Monday closest to August 10th. Among schools in northwestern North Carolina, McDowell, Mitchell and Caldwell counties would be part of the pilot program, Avery, Watauga and Ashe would not be included.

The two bills still have to be taken up by the State Senate.
