A suspect in a breaking and entering was shot by Wilkesboro police officers last Thursday.

The Wilkes Jounral Patriot reports Jacobo Torres Hernandez, age 43, was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for treatment of gunshot wounds to the leg and chest. Sgt. Ronnie Price went to Wilkes Regional Medical Center for treatment of a laceration to his hand.

The owner of the home, Steven Howell, came home for lunch and was assaulted with an ax by Hernandez, who was breaking into the residence. Howell was treated at Wilkes Regional and released.

Price and Officer Nathan Dancy responded to the home just south of the Wilkesboro city limits. The officers encountered Hernandez in the basement area and shots were fired. In a statement released Friday, the SBI said Hernandez was found to be in possession of an ax and was ordered to stop and show his hands. Hernandez advanced towards the officers, raised the ax in an aggressive manner and was subsequently shot.”

Price and Dancy are on administrative leave pending completion of the SBI Investigation. The Wilkes Sheriff’s Office is investigating the assault on Howell and the breaking and entering.
